6 Steps to Nailing the Perfect Layered Look

By  September 18, 2014

6-Steps-to-Nailing-the-Perfect-Layered-Look

As a stylist, I get a lot of questions on the topic of layering. It can sometimes be really difficult to figure out what looks good and what doesn’t. There is also that age old conundrum, how do I look cool, stylish, as opposed to bulky and overdone? Then there are the women who are afraid to layer their clothes for the fear of looking bigger than they actually are. The layering universe can be a scary place, I get it.

Here’s the good news, a perfectly layered look will compliment your curves and create the illusion of a proportional silhouette. Rocking lots of layers also helps manage falls tricky temperatures (wake up and its 45 degrees, come lunch time its 70) because you can strip down or add to depending on the weather.

I’ve got a few tips that will help you layer like a champ come fall.

Step 1: Start with Basics

For the first layer, stick to the basics. I suggest a solid neutral, lightweight top that can go with anything! Keep it somewhat fitted to keep your shape looking slim.

Step 2: Add a Sweater

You’ve nailed step 1, now just throw on your favorite knit sweater or soft cardigan. Make sure its a fine knit, we still want to keep the silhouette nice and tight.

Step 3: Add Jacket … and belt it

Now toss on a jacket or a blazer and belt it.The belt is a key ingredient here. It locks in the layers and shows off your fabulous waist.

Step 4: Pants, please!

Pick your poison when it comes to your bottoms but make sure you they flatter your figure. My favorite for fall is a pair of great leather leggings. Why? Well they are warm and a perfect for step 5 …

Step 5: Boots

Tall boots scream fall and act as a layer over your pants. Tall boots work best with skinny jeans or leather leggings.

Step 6: Accessorize

Step 6 is where you can really have some fun. Fall will add some depth and visual interest to your look without making you too hot. Try cute beanie or a fedora, an interested scarf, or layered jewelry to give your look that always necessary finishing touch.

BeyJayParisEvery day, we bring you celebrity sightings and stylings as seen everywhere from the streets to the red carpet. Whether they’re dolled up or dressed down, we can’t resist the need to know who wore what.

Despite what rumors might be swirling about their relationship, we can’t get enough of Bey and Jay—especially since seeing their epic On The Run tour. Now that they’re gallivanting through Europe together following the end of the tour, we’ve got a close eye on them. We’re not necessarily saying that Beyoncé is or isn’t preggers; we’re not even going to go ahead and pick one side or the other on the divorce controversy. But we will say that this is one well-dressed couple.

Editor's Pick: Keep Collective Customizable Bracelet

By  September 17, 2014

Discover your next obsession with our Editor’s Pick series, must-have products for your home, wardrobe, makeup bag, and office curated by Glam editors. keep collective Amidst the Fashion Week madness, editors and other attendees find a bit of pampering and some much needed peace thanks to the slew of style stops set up around the city. I made sure to use a break between runway shows to visit the New York Fashion Week Lounge at the Empire Hotel where I got to recharge my struggling cell phone via the handful of Happy Plugs provided, create a Bite Beauty lipstick at the brand’s mobile lip station, and, being the bling obsessed glam girl I am, create my very own unique KEEP Collective bracelet–an accessory I’ll be sporting before anyone else!

It’s not an exclusive sort of thing or anything; KEEP Collective just hasn’t officially launched yet. As of January 2015, though, the line will be sold through independent KEEP Representatives at social trunk shows as well as online at www.keep-collective.com … you know, Stella & Dot style. That’s KEEP Collective’s mother brand, actually. Embracing the motto “Life Celebrated,” the KEEP Collective staff encouraged me to express my individuality and one of a kind story through the creation of my customized wrap bracelet. From the leather, metal, and mesh bands, I chose gold mesh and then added a square touchstone as the centerpiece, detailed with a series of different bars on both sides. Becca Tobin, Danielle Brooks, and Tinsley Mortimer stopped by too to design their own personalized bracelet. I wonder what details they each chose to decorate with?

Michelle Obama’s Fashion Education Workshop

By  September 17, 2014

MichelleObamaFashionWorkshopSince her first public appearance as First Lady years ago, Michelle Obama has always made a fashion statement. Whether she chose an evening gown by a young designer or an outfit from J. Crew, everyone always wanted to know what she was wearing. It’s this dedication to the fashion industry that prompted her to host a White House event that connects fashion students from Washington, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania with leading fashion professionals.

The Fashion Education Workshop is meant “to bring members of the fashion industry to the White House and enlighten, educate and mentor the next generation of fashion leaders,” according to an e-mail written by White House social secretary Jeremy Bernard. Though a handful of invited guests have politely declined, Maria Cornejo, Prabal Gurung, Reed Krakoff and Bibhu Mohapatra will be some of the designers in attendance. The five-hour event will include individual workshops, a luncheon featuring remarks by the First Lady and a panel discussion. Afterwards, Obama will host a Celebration of Design reception along with other designers and fashion executives likely including Naeem Khan, Jason Wu, Thom Browne, Diane von Furstenberg and Thakoon Panichgul and executives from Jimmy Choo and Talbots.
