Style Scoop: Barbie Joins Instagram, Vogue Italia’s Anniversary Cover Marks The Return of the Model, Valentino Makes Rockstud Sneakers
Instagram just got a taste of what it’s like to be a Barbie Girl—from Barbie herself. The original style icon hopped on social media on Wednesday with an Instagram handle: @barbiestyle. Her posts consist of outfits of the day and accessories shout outs. She looks like a seasoned fashion blogger already. [Huffington Post]
Vogue US’s cover was pretty epic, but Vogue Italia’s 50th anniversary issue might just trump it. The fold-out cover, shot by Steven Meisel, features models Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Natasha Poly, Anna Ewers and more. The vintage-looking shot gives a nostalgic look at fashion history: when models covered magazines, as opposed to high-profile celebrities. It’s official: models are making a comeback. This is not your average Rockstud. The ubiquitous Valentino Rockstud is getting remixed—into a sneaker. In honor of the fashion house’s new three-story flagship on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli are debuting a limited edition, unisex style of “Rockrunner” sneakers to be sold exclusively at the location. There’s white-on-white camouflage, red hearts, and of course white studs. [T Magazine]
In a fashion week first, Bill de Blasio will welcome the CFDA to Gracie Mansion on Wednesday, September 3 for a cocktail party kickoff. Since his wife, Chirlane McCray, has demonstrated an interest in American designers, it makes sense that de Blasio is showing his support for New York’s fashion industry. Formal invitations were sent to Diane von Furstenberg, Prabal Gurung and Zac Posen, among others, for the momentous fashion event. [Women’s Wear Daily]
As a bona-fide celebrity do-gooder, Sophia Bush is doing what she does best in collaboration with Joe Fresh. The starlet teamed up with the retailer to make a t-shirt that advocates for equal rights. The idea behind the graphic tee is that “all kisses are created equal, and love should never be divided.” The shirt is available not for $24 at joefresh.com. [InStyle]

I just had to take my time to find a pair of the right street style-worthy sneakers. The process went a little bit like this: I saw them everywhere this past spring, and therefore decided that Stan Smith’s had come and gone; sneaker wedges just aren’t my look; the duds with metallic detailing are cool, but not my aesthetic either; and simply put, my worn-out white Converse low-tops just weren’t going to cut it at Lincoln Center.
When I finally came across these vintage-y Nike sneakers, I immediately knew that they deserved a place in my (already full) New York City-sized closet. They’re suede, but the light color makes them wearable nearly year-round—not to mention the fact that, they’re neutral, AKA my perpetual palette of choice. But even so, I was drawn to them because they just weren’t trying too hard, like some “fashion kicks” tend to do. These high-tops are a Nike classic, but with J.Crew’s help, they received a jolt of modern-day trend. So, when will I wear them, you ask? When every other fashionista in New York City will be fashionizing her sneakers, of course: all over New York Fashion Week. While I do think sneakers-as-a-trend is the best excuse the fashion set could come up with for wanting to trade in pointy stilettos and sky-high platforms for something more wearable, my feet will surely be thanking me for submitting to it. –Lauren Kaplan
Every day, we bring you celebrity sightings and stylings as seen everywhere from the streets to the red carpet. Whether they’re dolled up or dressed down, we can’t resist the need to know who wore what.
Emma Stone is always a red carpet stunner, but she had somewhat of a moment at the premiere of Birdman in Venice, Italy. The striking starlet chopped her hair for the occasion, and picked out one of the most delightful gowns we’ve seen her wear in a while. Recently, she’s been favoring crop tops and casual braids for a laid-back approach to red carpet dressing, but we very much like where she’s headed with this glamorous look.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is back again for another stylish season, and we’re already counting down the days until the mad dash to Lincoln Center and the city’s haute spots. Before the spring selections hit the runway, we asked some of our favorite designers, including Rachel Zoe, Mara Hoffman, Nicole Miller, and more to give us insight into their inspiration for their new collections with sketches, photos, and stories to whet our appetite for fresh fashion!
As if her performance (not that that word even does it justice) at the VMAs wasn’t enough, Beyoncé is making more fashion news this week—as the cover star of the 5th issue of CR Fashion Book. It hits stands September 4, otherwise known as “B-Day.”
When CR Fashion Book shared the stunning cover on Instagram, our mouths just about hit the floor. Then, we saw photos from the spread on Tumblr, and our jaws actually did hit the floor. That stare! That hair! Dare we even speak about those other worldly cheekbones? Oh, and she also wrote a poem (remixed by Forrest Gander) called Bey The Light, which is featured alongside the incredible portraits. Carine: you struck sartorial gold with this spread.
Decked out in Yohji Yamamoto (on the cover), Prada, Saint Laurent, DKNY, Lorraine Schwartz, David Webb, Verdura, Givenchy and Harry Winston, Yoncé serves. it. up. We’re not even sure how that whole squat-and-simze thing is even humanly possible, but leave it to Beyoncé to prove that it most certainly is. In the scheme of one photoshoot, she manages to be sultry, full-on sexy, dangerous, a little bit silly (but, like, really, can we please look like that kind of black cat on Halloween?), humbled and powerful. How? We will never know.
Shot by Pierre Debusschere with creative direction from Riccardo Tisci, “The empress of pop meets a force of fashion. In her first collaboration with Carine Roitfeld, the ever-changing Beyoncé expresses her many moods, manners, auras, and multifaceted characters. All hail!” Lest we need to describe it in any other way: this is a bow down bitches fashion moment.
As one of the biggest topics in fashion and athletics, everyone is vying for a piece of the market. Consider Klum’s latest attempt a valiant one, because her New Balance designs are legit. This isn’t the first time the supermodel has teamed up with the activewear experts, and it makes sense: as far as activewear goes, leave it to Klum to make it completely chic.
The America’s Got Talent judge’s fall active wear line for New Balance is aimed at yoga and fitness enthusiasts. The line features animal prints, moody hues and a slashing effect. “In this collection, I also played with fabric cutouts that mimic a skeletal structure for an edgy and fashion-forward look,” Klum said. Making up the collection are bomber jackets, hoodies, tanks and capris, which are complemented by New Balance’s signature 890V4 running shoe and 715 training shoe. We wouldn’t be shocked to see these pieces at Lincoln Center next week…and then all over the gym the following week. They’re versatile and serve a purpose beyond just going to the gym, which is something that everyone seems to be after these days. If we were to turn the tables on Klum and judge her design work, we’d give her rave reviews.
The collection retails for $35-$95 and is available in stores and on the brand’s website.
Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett are a dynamic duo that truly can’t be stopped. They’ve made waves in the music industry with their latest album collaboration, Cheek to Cheek, and now they’re making a fashion statement—with H&M. The artists, whose images are totally incongruous, unite for the retailer’s holiday campaign, which debuts at the end of November. Of note are some of H&M’s past big-name campaign stars: Beyoncé, Lana del Rey, Gary Oldman, Johnny Depp, Tyra Banks, Dave Gahan, Isabella Rossellini, Tony Ward, Lauren Hutton, Mads Mikkelsen, Bryan Ferry and Jade Jagger.
We have to say, this unlikely pair is really growing on us—they look pretty cute! The commercial features a track from their album with Gaga dressed in H&M, of course. Women’s Wear Daily reports that an extended version of the ad is also slated to appear on H&M’s website. Something tells us this commercial jingle will be stuck in our heads all holiday season long.

Arriving just in time for my vacation to Hawaii, OtterBox’s most fashion forward case yet couldn’t have been more suited for a stylish island getaway. Exploding with bold hues and edgy patterns, this high-powered iPhone cover managed to make a statement all in itself–the same way an awesome outfit or hot hairdo would. This comes as no surprise, of course, being that it was designed by a woman at the forefront of fashion today.
Nina Garcia, the Creative Director of Marie Claire, a “Project Runway” judge, and one of my favorite leaders in the industry is the creative behind my beautiful case. Her runway ready, fashion-oriented cover is part of OtterBox’s “Symmetry Series,” meant to keep smartphones safe in a sleek, slim, visually appealing cover. Garcia’s design, titled “Brazilian Pop!” and inspired by the movement and colors of beautiful Brazil is more than just a phone case. “It reflects my passion for style,” the style icon explains.
Fabulous it may be, but per OtterBox standards, Garcia’s couture cover proved functional too. My iPhone withstood shock from drops and remained scratch and dent free, protected along my ten day long Oahu adventure, from waterfall bound hikes to sand filled beach days…and everything in between. The colorful case is available to subscribers of the Nina Garcia ‘Brazilian Summer #NGQ03’ box and for a limited time, on the OtterBox website for iPhone 5/5s and the Galaxy S 5.
If you haven’t heard, summer camp isn’t just for youngsters anymore. Now that Color War is open to big kiddies (aka, adults) the summer staple of heading off into the woods for a week-long adventure is enjoying a revival of enthusiasm. Although the activities may be the same, (arts & crafts, tug of war, slip and slide) the necessities inside our trunks and backpacks are drastically different. Outside of the essentials like sheets, towels, and tennis shoes, here are a few of the goodies we’ll be packing in our weekend tote as we head back in time and return to camp.
- Jane Ireland’s Botanical Brush Spray may be billed as a makeup brush cleanser, but the mix of witchhazel and grapefruit extracts is actually the healthiest and most effective bug spray out there.
- As grown ups who are well versed in #HealthyObsessions, it’s impossible to go an entire weekend without an infusion of Liquiteria All Greens and jolt of energy from our go-to juice destination.
- Kind Bars – Healthy snacks with a touch of dessert, because we’re still kids at heart, clearly.
- The lake (and the slip and slide) is no place for a bikini. Bring on the return of one pieces!
- Honest Sunscreen Spray. Need we expand upon the necessity of SPF?
- We won’t tell the (non existent counselors) if this is filled with alcoholic Bug Juice instead of water.
- What’s camp without friendship bracelets?
- Camp gets cold at night, but a grey hoodie just won’t do when there are Instagram photos to be taken around the bonfire. This Forever 21 Cardigan will keep you warm and ready to pose with your camp boyfriend.
- If you’ve been holding out on re-upping your Birkenstock collection, let camp be the final excuse you need to return to the ‘90s.
- When it’s time for Color War, you’ll still stand out in your camp t-shirt as long as you pair it with these Sweaty Betty capris.
