Derek Lam Takes Us to the Ballet

By  April 16, 2014

Another day, another exciting collaboration. This time Derek Lam is teaming up with Jamie Wolf on a jewelry collection inspired by choreographer George Balanchine called Black and White!

The pieces reflectt the fluidity of  dance with what Lam refers to as “penultimate simplicity, rigorousness, repetition, and geometry in Balanchine’s choreography,” he told Vogue. “It’s incredibly beautiful in a very spare way.”

Wolf, a former dancer with the New York City Ballet, linked with the designer in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the dance troupe with 20% of the jewelry’s proceeds benefitting NYCB. The twosome often attend shows together. “He had such a purist approach,” said Wolf. “We wanted to pay reverence to that form and isolate movements or moments in a ballet in one single piece.”

We say: mission accomplished. You can purchase pieces from the collaboration at Lam’s flagship store in New York or on Wolf’s website starting April 16th.

Style Scoop: Desigual Signs Adriana Lima, Mary Katrantzou Kicks It with Adidas, Real Simple Clothes

By  April 16, 2014

Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima has been a very busy girl. In addition to announcing that VS is taking their show on the road—literally—to London, Desigual announced that the Brazilian model will become its very first brand ambassador. [Women’s Wear Daily]

First Kanye West, then Pharrell, and now Mary Katrantzou will team up with Adidas! The partnership isn’t a one-time thing, either; Katrantzou and Adidas will “be a long-term union.” We will begin to see the fruits of this labor in November when the sneakers (surely featuring splashy prints) hit stores. [Elle]

Another magazine is looking to dress its readers! Real Simple has linked with an apparel and accessories company, Cuyana, to sell merchandise on its website called Cuyana for Real Simple. The first collection will be released on May 15th with three others to follow throughout the year, that are “intended to help women simplify their lives and their wardrobes by offering beautiful, versatile and affordable items that are so sophisticated and made to last.” [Women’s Wear Daily]

Everyone loves Jared Leto. Including Giuseppe Zanotti, apparently. “I like Jared Leto,” the shoe designer said in an interview with The Coveteur. “I saw his movie [Dallas Buyers Club]—he’s very cool. I send him a lot of shoes. I like his style. He’s an artist—not in one way, but in two, three ways. He shows you can apply your sensibility in different ways.” [The Coveteur]

Mary Katrantzou Lends her Digital Prints to Adidas

By  April 16, 2014

So many designer sportswear collaborations to keep up with, so little time! While Riccardo Tisci lends his lux vision to Nike and Solange Knowles launches her ‘Girls of Blaze’ Disc Collection for Puma, London based designer Mary Katrantzou will be teaming up with Adidas for a line of footwear and apparel. Recent partners of Adidas include Stella McCartney, Raf Simons, and currently Topshop, so Katrantzou is in good company.

Upon the announcement of the new collaboration, set to launch this November, the designer of digital printed dresses, 3-D embellished separates, and sharp silhouettes took to her Instagram to say, “When Adidas first approached me, I really took time to think about what I could offer that’s different, what I could say through this collection that they haven’t said before. I grew up, like so many other kids around the world, wearing Adidas sneakers and bringing my vision to such a global brand is a great challenge.”

Dirk Schoenberger, the global creative director of Adidas’s sport style domain, expressed his excitement as well.  ”The collaboration between Adidas and Mary Katrantzou merges the exceptional talent of one of the most interesting designers of today and a company that embraces many different cultures from sports, pop music and fashion.I admire Mary’s extraordinary sense of printing techniques, colours and silhouette that will bring another amazing new aesthetic to the Adidas Originals women’s collection,” he told Vogue UK.

Based on the standout style aesthetic that Katrantzou has built her fashion empire off of, we’ll be expecting bold colors, high quality materials, printed textiles and a focus on architectural form for her Adidas line. And with a celebrity following like hers, we won’t be surprised to see Katrantzou’s fans Rihanna, Jessica Alba and Anna dello Russo rocking her looks this fall.

Solange-and-Beyonce-Coachella-2014

We didn’t think we could be any more obsessed with the Knowles sisters–but it happened. Beyonce crashed Solange‘s set at Coachella Saturday night, and between their genuine excitement to see one another and the sweet embrace that followed, this duo won our hearts again for the millionth time. Despite the drop-in being last minute, Beyonce and Solange’s impromptu duet to “Losing You” proved flawless. Would we expect anything less from these two? “Give it up for my favorite dance partner, my favorite person in the world, my sister Beyonce,” Solange exclaimed as her Queen Bey excited the stage.

As if the synchronized cameo complete with bodacious body rolls and hot hair shaking wasn’t enough, the sisters had us swooning over their savvy style choices as well. Beyonce rolled in wearing tropical print separates and a sassy black hat to accompany her sister Solange, who rocked a red-orange jumpsuit by Max Mara and white booties. While our own spontaneous sibling performances may be limited to family parties and karaoke bar nights, we can channel the Knowles sisters’ style. Check out our picks and get their looks for less!

Fresh off of his initial public offering, Michael Kors just signed a deal with Luxottica Group for Michael Kors Collection and Michael Michael Kors Eyewear that will last 10 years beginning in 2015. “We have achieved great success in the new eyewear business and believe that our new partnership will further enhance our luxury image in the optical and sunglass marketplace,” John D. Idol, CEO of Michael Kors, said. [GLAM Inbox]

While Marc Jacobs cranked up the dial with a fresh take on Louis Vuitton, it’s up to Nicolas Ghesquière to create a balance between that newness and the brand’s storied heritage. That means “it’s up to Ghequière to write a language for Vuitton.” We’re sure he’s up to the challenge. [Women’s Wear Daily]

Speaking of writing a language, the Council of Fashion Designers of America have just released their latest tome, what CFDA CEO Steven Kolb describes, “the collective voice of American Fashion.” Oh, and there are illustrations. Marissa Webb has a new job!

The former head of design at J.Crew is the new creative director and executive vice president of design for Gap Inc.’s Banana Republic division.

When she takes over the role on April 28th, she will oversee the brand’s creative direction and lead global product design for Banana Republic women’s, men’s and accessories, Women’s Wear Daily is reporting.

Once again, we find Alexander Wang’s name on the tip of our tongue. Though, this time it isn’t because he has a new headphones collaboration, that he teamed up with H&M, or even is forcing the glitterati to migrate to Brooklyn.

Though, he inspired a French fashion house to do so—Christian Dior will show its spring/summer 2015 pre-collection at the Brooklyn Navy Yard—where Wang showed his Fall 2014 collection—in May.

“We wanted the show to feel very New York, and the Navy Yard’s view and space captures the city,” a Dior spokesperson told Women’s Wear Daily.

Showing a cruise collection at a shipyard? We like it!

Come December 2nd, Victoria’s Secret is trading New York City’s Lexington Armory for Earl’s Court in London.

Today, Adrianna Lima made the announcement at the company’s Bond Street store saying, “The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is the biggest fashion event in the world. We are very proud and honored to announce that we’re heading to London this year.”

Previously the show has taken place in Cannes, Miami, and Los Angeles, in addition to New York.

“We’ve wanted to come to London since 1998, and we’re just really excited to be here,” Victoria’s Secret’s chief marketing officer Ed Razek said during the announcement.

“We would love to invite Prince Harry,” Lima said. “He definitely has a front row seat.”

No doubt Prince Harry wouldn’t have any objections to that!

Style Scoop: Kendall Jenner is Nosy, Delphine Arnault Speaks Out, Kate Upton Envies Cameron Diaz

By  April 14, 2014

Kendall-Jenner-Nose-Ring

We see your flower crown and raise you one nose ring courtesy of Kendall Jenner, who seriously upped the ante on body piercings over the weekend at Coachella when she showed up to Lacoste’s champagne party in a tube top, jean shorts, headscarf, and one large silver hoop earring connected to a chain. Hm. Chain reaction, anyone? [Fashionista]

Delphine Arnault has been working her way up the ranks at LVMH. Bernard Arnault’s oldest daughter is making a name for herself, heading up the LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize and becoming more vocal than ever. “I firmly believe that success lies in the combination of both talent and business savvy, and that the magic comes through partnership between both,” she said. “It’s important to see both sides, the business and the creativity.” [Women’s Wear Daily]

Here’s something you don’t hear everyday: swimsuit model Kate Upton wishes that she had smaller, ahem, assets. “I wish I had smaller boobs every day of my life, as I would love to wear spaghetti tops braless or go for the smallest bikini designs,” Upton said. “In my eyes, Cameron Diaz has the perfect figure.” [Radar Online]

In the most obvious news ever, Alexander Wang joined Instagram over the weekend. Prior to Wang’s Coachella  announcement that he was teaming up with H&M, the designer wasn’t on the picture-sharing site. He sure knows how to make an entrance! [The Cut]
