Style Snaps: July 28, 2014

By  July 28, 2014

JAlbaPostimgEvery day, we bring you celebrity sightings and stylings as seen everywhere from the streets to the red carpet. Whether they’re dolled up or dressed down, we can’t resist the need to know who wore what.

It turns out that comics aren’t just for “nerds” anymore. In fact, the women that walked the red carpet at Comic-Con International 2014 proved that they’re for bona-fide fashionistas, too. Among the comic-book-worthy looks we’ve spotted thus far, Jessica Alba‘s patterned skirt and hairdo made her a standout this weekend. Oh, her superhero-status abs helped, too.

Style Scoop: Singers Are the New Supermodels, Surfboardt in Anna Sui, Step Into Harrods Shoe Heaven

By  July 28, 2014

Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing is in the new wave of designers that embrace Zara and pop culture. “I’m really happy that Balmain is copied–when I did my Miami collection and we did the black and white checks, I knew they would be in Zara and H&M. But they did it in a clever way – they mixed a Céline shape with my Balmain print! Well done! I love that.”

Oh, and you heard it here first: singers are the new supermodels. “”When you look at an old Versace show, you loved the dress, but you loved Claudia Schiffer, you loved Cindy Crawford. Supermodels! With Rihanna you get that too. Today people are looking at Rihanna like they were looking at Naomi Campbell or Claudia… nobody wants to be a model, everybody wants to be a singer. That’s the new dream. I think having Rihanna in the campaign is like having Cindy Crawford of Christy Turlington, but for my generation.” [British Vogue]

Surfboardt, surfboardt. Anna Sui is teaming up with O’Neill to debut a 16-piece collection in April 2015, inspired by the Laurel Canyon from the 60s and 70s. “I have always been drawn toward the California free-spirited lifestyle, which is at the core of the O’Neill brand,” Sui said. “My Bohemian style translates into their surf culture and sportswear perfectly.” The collection will also feature Sui’s signature butterfly motif. Shoe lovers, welcome to mecca. Harrods will unveil at 42,square-foot suited dubbed, Harrods Shoe Heaven on August 1.  The area will sell shoes from fashion heavyweights like Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, and Valentino. “It’s the biggest project we have ever done at Harrods in terms of capital expenditure,” said Helen David, the store’s fashion director of women’s wear, accessories, fine jewelry and children’s wear. “Every department store worth its salt has a high-end department for [footwear], and this is how Harrods does a shoe hall.” [Women’s Wear Daily]

Edie Campbell only agreed to walk in Marc Jacob’s final show for Louis Vuitton—nearly nude—because she had a few drinks. “I had quite a few mojitos by that point so I was just agreeing to anything,” the model said. “They said, ‘Perfect! Come to studio tomorrow so we can fit your jeweled thong’… I was exhausted—I’d had about six hours’ sleep in three days—and I couldn’t sit down while I was being painted. The guy painting the type just completely lost the plot and kept spelling words wrong, so would have to rub it out and start again. By the end I was being held up by two assistants. It was incredibly stressful.” [British Vogue]

Live in style in Miami courtesy of Fendi. The Italian fashion house is partnering with Château Group to develop Fendi Château Residences, a 12-story waterfront condo with 58 units at 9365 Collins Avenue that will open June 2016. “Fendi Château Residences further consolidate our ties in the luxury private property sector, in particular with a qualitative partner like Château Group,” said Fendi chairman and chief executive officer Pietro Beccari. “It fully expresses the codes, history and savoir-faire that characterize Fendi.” [Women’s Wear Daily]

Piper Perabo Marries in Michael Kors 2014 Resort

By  July 28, 2014

Coyote Ugly actress Piper Perabo, 37, married her longtime beau Stephen Kay, 51, on Saturday in New York City in an unconventional wedding dress—that you may have seen before.

The Covert Affairs actress said her vows in a Michael Kors 2014 Resort illusion column gown. Perhaps you’ll recall, Naomi Campbell wore the same dress to the National Television Awards. Katy Perry wore a sleeveless version of the gown to the 9th Annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball Performance while Jennifer Lopez wore a version to the 2013 Met Gala. Clearly not one to rest on tradition, Perabo paired her gown with a light yellow veil and a bouquet of pale roses.

Perabo met Kay on the set of Covert Affairs where he is an executive producer and director on the show and the couple became engaged last September. Congrats!

Cara Delevingne’s Topshop Campaign is Here

By  July 28, 2014

CaraDTopshopBack in June, we learned that Topshop had something rather fancy up its sleeve for its fall 2014 campaign, involving global expansion and Cara Delevingne. It’s all finally here—and it doesn’t disappoint. The launch of the campaign marks Topshop’s moves for expansion into Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Egypt, New Zealand and Panama. In addition, a giant flagship is slated to open on 5th Avenue in New York, as well as four other US stores.

The campaign was shot by Alasdair McLellan in a London townhouse and consists of 12 solo shots of Delevingne wearing lots of leather, fur and minis. Naturally, the accompanying 1-minute-30-second behind the scenes video shows her loving every second of it. After all, can you blame her? The Kate Moss-esque looks possess a cool-girl vibe that Delevingne captures with ease. In case you needed further proof, check out the video, which involves light sabers, disco balls and Delevingne’s pet bunny, Cecil, altogether confirming that these two are a match made in heaven.

Style Scoop: CFDA Takes Over the Fashion Calendar, Get in the Ring with Chanel, Fashion Continues to Save Italy

By  July 25, 2014

Beginning October 1, the Council of Fashion Designers of America will integrate a tool created by Ruth Finley in 1945, streamlining how fashion shows and events are scheduled. “The Fashion Calendar has been one of the foundations on our industry, ensuring that the press, retailers and designers are able to come together in an efficient manner,” CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg said. “Now that it is part of the CFDA, we are prepared and excited to take it into the new world.” [Women’s Wear Daily]

We wondered what Karl Lagerfeld would do to showcase his Chanel supermarket, and well, he asked Cara Delevingne to do her best Rocky impersonation in the ring. Chanel’s Fall 2014 ad shows off the quilted goods against a chain link fence while Delevinge and Binx Walton go for a quick jog in their branded sneaks and plaids. We’d sprint for Chanel too. [Fashionista]

In another example of how fashion is saving Italy, Giorgio Armani will create a new gallery in front of his company’s headquarters, to offer a platform for new and emerging fashion designers, with learning spaces including classes and a library. The gallery will also host a permanent exhibition of Armani’s archive designs and sketches. “Milan is the city where I decided to live and work, and which has been a tough, loyal teacher to me. It taught me that you don’t obtain anything by chance, but that you reach the most difficult goals with daily involvement,” the designer said. “That’s why I’ve decided to put the fruits of my work, which doesn’t only include clothes but textile explorations and experience, at the disposal of my city. I thought it would be interesting for everybody, in particular for the young generations approaching fashion and design worlds.” [British Vogue]

Award-winning actress Halle Berry is partnering with Watch Hunger Stop campaign with Michael Kors to help build a world with zero hunger. She will work with the designer to raise awareness and funds for Nations World Food Programme (WFP). “I’m delighted to continue working with Michael Kors and the UN World Food Programme in this effort to achieve a world without hunger,” said Berry. “Since we first launched the 100 series watch last spring, we’ve helped WFP deliver more than five million meals to children in need. I’m proud of what we’ve done together and eager to continue this effort to make a difference in the lives of people in need.” [Glam Inbox]

Do you dream of sitting front row during Fashion Week? Here’s your chance, courtesy of Watermill Center Summer Auction. For $25,000—that’s the starting bid, mind you—you could have two front row tickets to Fendi, Prada, and Giorgio Armani shows during Milan Fashion Week. Or, $10,000 earns you two front row seats to the Miu Miu show in Paris. And super baller folks among us, you can buy outright packages for $95,000 and $25,000 respectively, outright. [Elle]

Boop! Nene Leakes is debuting her bold eponymous clothing collection, Nene Nene Leakes, on July 28 on HSN. “I wanted my collection to be bold and give women of all shapes and sizes the opportunity to look and feel fabulous,” the Real Housewives of Atlanta star said. “I believe that every woman deserves her moment to shine. I want my clothing line to be versatile. A lot of pieces can take you from day to night; from the grocery store to drink with your girlfriends.” Nene Nene Leakes will retail between $39.90 and $139.90. NeNe will be live on air on Monday, July 28th, at 12.00am-2.00am, 12.00pm-2.00pm and 9.00pm-11.00pm. Her collection can now be viewed on HSN.com. [Glam Inbox]

Editor’s Pick: Hipanema Tenderness Bracelet

By  July 25, 2014

Discover your next obsession with our Editor’s Pick series, must-have products for your home, wardrobe, makeup bag, and office curated by Glam editors.

I am a huge advocate of bold beach jewelry. Though slightly impractical for sun and surf, accessorizing your swimwear with the right pieces adds instant glamour to any look. I tend to mix my wardrobe of Zimmermann suits and Mara Hoffman cover-ups with long beaded necklaces and bright arm parties. But piling on the baubles can add unnecessary effort to your vacation and so I totally appreciate this bracelet from Hipanema, which is essentially seven strands in one.

Designed by two Parisian girls who met in Rio, each bracelet includes Brazilian trinkets; ribbons from Bahia mix with Copacabana strands, quartz stones and various seashells. They are the kind of pieces that evince that summer vacation vibe. – Nola Weinstein

House of Style Gets Fancy with Iggy Azalea

By  July 25, 2014

… She’s so fancy and MTV knows!

Australian rapper Iggy Azalea is on tap to be the host of MTV’s House of Style when it returns again.

In 2012, MTV brought beloved 90s fashion series back with Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss who gave viewers n behind the scenes peek at the world of modeling. The web series only lasted one season.

Now, Azealea it seems, after starring in ad campaigns for Revolve House of Harlow, performing during the Alexander Wang x H&M announcement, has officially earned her fashion stripes.

It doesn’t hurt that she brought the Clueless closet to life, either.

We can see Azalea take on her hosting duties when the show airs on August 4 on MTV.com as she chronicles how the fashion industry evolves alongside music and technology. As a bonus, Azalea will host a special 2014 VMA edition on August 26.

Fearless Founders: Meet Katie Johnson of Carbon38

By  July 25, 2014

fearless founder carbon

It’s time to inspire her mind! In our constantly connected world, women are inundated with information and opportunity. verizon logo2Especially inspiring are the true innovators that push through barriers and prove that women are equipped to excel in any industry. Many of them are changing our world one startup at a time.  At Glam, we love women who encourage other women to push forward in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) based education and professions. In this series, Jesse Draper sits down with fearless founders to talk about their career paths, educational backgrounds and why STEM matters:

Carbon38 is an e-commerce site where you can purchase high end athletic wear. I recently began a working relationship with Katie Johnson of Carbon38 who I met through a mutual friend.  As someone who represents a technology company that merges fashion with a STEM field, we thought that Katie truly represented a female leader and groundbreaker in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics oriented careers. With the current STEM Initiative, we are looking to spread the word about incredible women in these professions like Katie Johnson.  Johnson is a former professional ballet dancer, recently closed a round of funding, and believes that workout wear is the new fashion. Here are 12 things I learned from Katie Johnson of Carbon38….

What is Carbon38?

Carbon38 is the premier e-commerce destination for fashion-forward activewear.  We source, manufacture and sell awesome pieces that can take you from board room to boxing ring, all the while looking pretty stellar.  Spandex is the new denim so at Carbon38 we explore the intersection of athleticism and style, functionality and fashion and push the limits of how we look at workout wear.  Life’s a sport; why not dress for it?

What inspired it?

In the last 5 to 10 years a new woman has emerged who is an entrepreneur, an executive, a wife, a mom, who also cares about her health and looking and feeling good. Her wardrobe is a vehicle for expression and an important feature of her daily grind that can help (or hinder) her progress. It’s time we had an awesome go-to that was machine washable, wrinkle-free, sexy, flattering, supportive in all the right places and feels like sweat pants.  Sounds a lot like what lives in our gym bag, no?

What makes it different than other fitness sites?

Variety is the spice of life!  Us ladies shop multi-brand for every other outfit in our closets why do we suddenly change our ways when shopping for yoga pants?  At Carbon38 we curate the coolest new designers from around the world and allow you to put together your own look – those Upside Paisley leggings, paired with Basics’ cotton/linen-blend blueberry tank over a Pilot leopard bra and topped off with a Work Out Life neoprene bomber make for the perfect getup to rock out a SoulCyle after grabbing lunch with the in-laws.

What has been the biggest change in your everyday life since the launch of your site?

I wear a whole lot more spandex.  And thus my dry-cleaning bills have gone down significantly.

How did you and your business partner Caroline meet?

We were ballet dancers together and met while training with the Miami City Ballet when we were 15.  We then ended up at Harvard together, lived and worked in NYC down the block from each other, Caroline became a devoted client when I became a fitness instructor and it only seemed natural that we start a business together.  I have never spent more time with another human being in my life.

How do the sales on the site work?

We are standard e-commerce; you browse, you like, you buy.  We also have an e-magazine, Page38, that we issue weekly.  We interview celebrities, athletes, bloggers, and stylists who help us curate looks and give us background into their own fitness routines.  It’s always good to have a little context when shopping.

What is your daily routine?

I wake up at 6am and roll into the kitchen for my first of 4 daily cups of green tea.  I am nursing a back injury so I hit the senior swim at the Westwood aquatic center for some laps and water aerobics (yes, I do have a floral swim cap and nose plug in my possession).  I hit the office by 8:30 and do my thing (conference calls, budget meetings, fire drills, the occasional whiteboard cartoon session, 4 pm shavasana, production meetings, fittings, snack drawer raids, etc, etc.) I hit the road by 7:30 and am home by 8:30 (Burbank to Beverly Hills is not the best, traffic-wise) pour myself a glass of wine, answer emails, make tomorrows to-do list, and have another snack drawer raid.  My bedtime alarm sounds at 10pm, which signals me throw on my cocktail party onesie PJs, turn on a little Cosmos and head off to dream land, just to do it all over again.

What inspires the fitness clothing designs?

Life!  If it doesn’t work in real life, and make you look amazing, feel amazing, be amazing then it doesn’t get made.  In all seriousness, activewear is a pretty basic subset of fashion – kind of like underwear.  The silhouette of a pair of underpants is the same regardless of designer.  Same goes for leggings.  What makes each piece unique depends on seams, fabric, patterns, trims.  We comb the fashion sphere for the newest coolest colors, fabrics, and prints.  Then engineer the most flattering seams for the perfect pair of tights.

What is your master plan?

To take a bite out of the activewear pie.  By gathering the most cutting-edge fitness apparel designers onto one platform we can combine our strengths to gather market share and further diversify the market Lululemon created.

How do you stay focused?

I have a Santal 26 candle on my desk.  As soon as things start to get hectic, I take a moment, light my candle, make myself a cup of tea, take a few deep breaths and carry on.  Those little routines help to cut through the chaos, re-center my focus and remind me that there is nothing out there that can’t be solved with a chai and a burning wick.

What are 3 workout tips you have for the rest of the working girl world?

1. Commercial-break planks: when watching TV, instead of fast forwarding through the ads, hit the deck and hold a plank.  It’ll tighten your core, trim down your waist and improve your posture – all things you will need at your next pool party.

2. Swivel chair: this is a throw back to my time teaching at Physique 57.  Grab a sturdy piece of furniture, rise up on your toes, glue your feet together, swivel your knees to the left while keeping your shoulders square and start pulsing until you feel the burn.  Repeat on the right.  Quads make up the biggest muscle group and are thus the biggest calorie burner.

3. Food:  Diet is 75% of the battle. Summer is a great time to load up on veggies and fruits because everything is in season and thus the most nutritious.  If you skip the baked beans in favor of the tomato salad at the cookout, you’ll cut a bunch of calories, and boost your lycopene and vitamin C intake.

What was the last picture you took on your phone?

A pretty bouquet of flowers that my co-founder sent me. She’s pretty cool.
