Say goodbye to the free cocktails, celebrity spottings, and late night shopping. It looks like Fashion’s Night Out is taking a hiatus in New York City.
What began as a way to revitalize shopping and bring money to the economy turned into quite the spectacle. As of late, FNO has met its fair share of criticism, including an opinionated Cathy Horyn sharing her feelings on what the Fashion Week kick off in September has become. With reality in mind, FNO sponsors, Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of American and NYC & Co, have decided to put the event–which has grown to include more than 500 cities nationwide and 30 cities around the country-on hold in Manhattan.
Though the intentions were there, FNO’s spiraled into somewhat of a circus. Stores would offer free cocktails, designer and celebrity appearances as a way to lure customers into the store. Though the amount of money coming back into the store thanks to their offerings was always up for debate. “You have to look at the event from many different angles, and we would always return to what was our original mission and purpose and that was to reinvigorate the shopping experience and the consumers’ engagement in stores,” chief executive officer of the CFDA Steven Kolb told Women’s Wear Daily.
While Fashion’s Night Out is on hiatus as we know it in the US, the event will live on internationally.
