Foundation 101: Get The Fresh-Faced And Natural Look

By  March 18, 2013

There’s nothing worse then spending time applying foundation, only to look in the mirror later in the day and see that your face doesn’t match your jawline or to find streaks of product all over your cheeks. Fear not, because foundation is your friend, and we’re here to show you how to use it. Here are four easy steps to get you on your way to natural-looking foundation.

  1. Always moisturize. If you start with dry skin, your foundation will eventually dry out and cake. Yuck! Make sure your skin is primed and smooth with a moisturizer or oil-free lotion before applying your foundation.
  2. Foundation should even out uneven patches of skin, not change your entire skin tone. Dot your foundation onto your cheeks, chin, nose, and the sides of your nose, where skin is most likely to be uneven in tone.
  3. Gently pat your foundation into your skin in a circular motion. Rubbing it in can leave streaks of product across your face. The warmth of your fingers as you’re patting allows the product to melt into your skin and gives it an airbrushed look.
  4. Set your foundation with a translucent powder, focusing on the T-zone, which tends to get shiny.

Now that you’ve mastered your foundation application, the next step is to use highlighters and bronzers to contour and highlight your skin for a luminous look.
