From Lips to Tips: The Fanning Sisters Channel New Age Punk at the Met

By  May 07, 2013

From dramatic rock-ready eyes to nails that celebrate punk minimalism, the Fanning girls took on this year’s Met Ball theme by paying attention to the details. Scoop the products they used, from their lips to their tips, and copy their style with the help of the celebrity beauty experts that created the looks!

Let’s start with the makeup! “It was important for us to create something in harmony with the Rodarte looks that Elle and Dakota were wearing,” explains Erin Ayanian, the artist who used NARS products to bring punk beauty to the Fanning sisters’ fresh faces. “We referenced the 80s film, Ladies And Gentlemen and The Fabulous Stains.” Ayanian opted for a softer look for Dakota, though she used Via Veneto Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner and Barrow Street Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner to create an extended, geometric looking cat-eye for extra flair.  Penny Lane Cream Blush on her cheeks and Nico Highlighting Blush on the apples completed the look. Elle’s makeup was a little more wild, giving off a tribal meets punk vibe. Ayanian used Soloman Islands Eye Paint on her lids, a palette not yet available, but the vivid cyan blue side of Mad Mad World Duo Eyeshadow will work just as well. Along with the blue, she used Jungle Red Lip Liner on the eyes. Lips were polished off with the Isola Bella Satin Lip Pencil.

Celebrity manicurist and Sally Hansen Nail Ambassador, Tracylee, was in charge for creating nails that would complement the rest of the Fanning sisters’ ensembles. For Dakota, she used Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Shoot the Moon mixed with Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Black Out. She painted three nails on each hand with the blended color and then added texture using a blotting technique over the base color, using a plastic bag and Shoot the Moon. The remaining fingers were painted with Shoot the Moon and were embellished with square black studs and stones. If you opted for bold and bright eye makeup, keep your mani simple like Elle’s and lacquer up in Complete Salon Manicure in Clear’d for Takeoff for a natural look that’ll balance the drama.
