Alexandre Herchcovitch It seems Herchcovitch likes his punk. His fall collection incorporated one key detail over and over—a wide belt with a smiling-skull buckle. Pairing it with high-waisted trousers and floral, chiffon dresses, he successfully created a feminine look with just enough edge to flow flawlessly down the runway.
Anna Sui Beatlemania is back and more fashionable than ever. Anna Sui’s exciting fall collection is part underground-London revival, part boho chic. With long necklaces, printed tights, magnificent boots, and baby-doll dresses, the show was stunning. And the brilliant color palette, featuring rich jewel tones, kept onlookers engaged until the last model's last step.
BCBG Max Azria Azria really laid it on thick for his fall collection. Layers of heather gray, brown, taupe, and even some purple dominated the runway. Knit shawls over knit tops over knit skirts over knit leggings—frequently all the same color. He did add a little spice to the mostly conservative show with librarian glasses, patent-leather knee-high boots, and berets.
Baby Phat Sex meets drama meets mod was the theme of Kimora Lee Simmons’s collection, which featured a surprising dark palette and lots of leg. Shorts with tights, cowl-neck tops, and leather opera-length gloves collided for an extra-spicy look. But the detail of choice was fur—fur vests, fur trim, and fur fringe.
Betsey Johnson Prior to her legendary end-of-show cartwheel, Johnson unveiled a colorful, playful ’80s-inspired collection. Though a touch more subdued than normal, the runway was still full of theatrics—short hems, lingerie-clad models, and a special nod to the birth of the designer’s first grandchild.
Calvin Klein Calvin Klein mixed a bit of sexy with his usual simplicity to create a classy and clean fall collection. Sheer black dresses, a smattering of fur, and two unexpected yet gorgeous red frocks grabbed every socialite’s attention. Geometric shapes and classic trousers were used effectively and elegantly—and clearly pleasing to all the rapt fashion editors in the front row.
Carolina Herrera The red-carpet designer to the stars did not disappoint with her fall collection. Herrera’s bursts of red, purple, orange, and aqua resulted in a stunning kaleidoscope unseen on the runway so far this week. Fur detail was used perfectly on full-length coats, vests, and a drop-dead gorgeous, formfitting lilac dress.
Diane von Furstenberg Wearing one of her own designs, von Furstenberg walked the runway at the conclusion of her colorful and very geometric show. Red-lipped models wore wrap dresses, high-waisted trousers, and loose-fitting suits featuring complementary combinations of black, white, red, and camel. And the showstopper of the collection? A floor-length, pewter wrap dress dripping with sequins.
Donna Karan Leaving prints, ornaments, and lots of color in her past, Karan unveiled a classic fall collection. While black was the color of choice, plum and red made striking, though not overwhelming, appearances too. Minimal makeup with bold lips and daring dresses with plunging necklines added just the right amount of spice to the stylish show.
Karl Lagerfeld The style was dark, somber, and unique—perfectly in line with the mood of the evening. It was the end of New York Fashion Week and the unveiling of Karl Lagerfeld’s first signature collection. Loads of layers, slouchy boots, and an immense variety of textures and fabrics defined the show. Worthy of a second look were the tailored suits with fabulous fur cuffs.
Kenneth Cole With an elegant nod to neutral hues and surprising uses of color, Kenneth Cole kicked off Fashion Week with a stylish (albeit rainy) bang. Dresses with pockets and asymmetrical lines as well as high-waisted trousers defined the veteran designer’s collection. The simple makeup and casual ponytails on the models complemented the clean look.
Luca Luca A feminine glow seemed to come from the runway during the Luca Luca show. Nudes, creams, whites, and light grays were painted together in an almost angelic way. The formfitting dresses and the skirt and blouse pairings were stunning in their simplicity. And the occasional splash of leopard-print fur was the perfect accompaniment to the light collection.
Marc Jacobs The collection celebrities and fashion insiders had been waiting for left the crowd begging for more. Dark plaids mixed with an almost grungy palette culminated in sober masterpieces. Throwing slouchy sweaters with trousers and oversize berets complemented Jacobs’s overall theme. And trust us, next fall’s It bags will be the ones carried in this show.
Nanette Lepore Edwardian England was the theme of Lepore’s fall collection. With the exception of a couple pieces, every ensemble had at least one red element brilliantly sewn in. From garnet tights to plunging scarlet dresses, this sophisticated collection successfully brought glamour to life.
Narciso Rodriguez Sleek has never looked so good. With clean lines, solid colors, and body-hugging fabrics, Rodriguez unveiled a characteristic, geometric delight. And while he mostly stayed away from the ultrafeminine trend popular on the runways this week, he did present a handful of softer, fuller pieces.
Oscar de la Renta Even though de la Renta sprinkled in some leather skirts and leopard-print fur, his collection was overall quite classy, sporty, and very Oscar. He didn’t disappoint the Sarah Jessica Parkers of the world—his signature full-skirt dress made a radiant appearance in red. And there were many frocks sure to have an encore on the red carpet during the next award season.
