Girl On Fire: How to Rock A Red Dress

By  January 14, 2013

If we learned anything about fashion from the 2013 Golden Globes, it was that red wasn’t just the color of the entrance carpet (or of holiday ensembles); celebrities were rocking the hue in every shade with gorgeous gowns and dazzling dresses. Women on fire with their red carpet dresses included Jennifer Lawrence in a coral red Christian Dior Haute Couture Gown (get her look for less here!) and Marion Cottilard, Claire Danes and Zooey Deschanel looking ravishing from brilliant blood orange to cherry colored ensembles. The shades got deeper with Jennifer Garder and Naomi Watts crimson red, almost burgundy, dresses, a little more sultry than the brighter looks of the other ladies in red.

Whatever shade of red they chose, these celebrities  made sure to style their whole look accordingly. Because it’s such a bold color, the shade is sure to garner attention, so this is the time to pay attention to detail. For a sexy lady in red type look, keep hair either straight and slick or try old Hollywood types waves. Makeup should be smokey. If you’re looking for a look that’s a bit more fun, try a retro braid or a messy bun updo, and keep makeup natural except for a pop of matte red or bright orange on your pout, two lip trends hot for spring. Accessories with neutrals, like beige or black, metallics, like gold, or citrus shades, like orange or other near reds. In terms of choosing the right dress, pick one in a material and silhouette that remains subtle and let the color do the talking. We love sweetheart top of Zooey Deschanel’s Oscar de la Renta gown or, for a sexier look, Claire Danes’ plunging neckline.
