It’s time to put the pedal to the metal on your skincare routine, and what better brand to vroom you into action than Kiehls. The American-based company has teamed up with amFAR this August for its annual Liferide, a 1,600 mile motorcycle adventure from Seattle to LA aimed to raise money to cure AIDS. Chris Salgardo, Kiehl’s US President, along with a slew of dedicated celebrity faces and passionate advocates are gearing up for the trek. The sweetest man in skincare, Salgardo, stopped by the Kiehl’s store in San Francisco to talk about the philanthropic mission, the special-edition hand salve that’s giving 100% of its proceeds to the endeavor, and the general importance of using the correct and best possible products on your skin at any age.

Q: What’s you number one favorite Kiehl’s product, if you had to pick?
A: Midnight Recovery. It’s a nighttime treatment that has no water and 99% botanical oils. You put it on your skin and you just see a difference. And what’s unique about it, and this is so hard for Americans to wrap their heads around, is that even if you get a blemish, which are really irritating, you put this oil on and it will help. I use it after I get off my motorcycle. It’s the only thing I travel with.
Q: Do you use a moisturizer over it?
A: You can if you need more. I use it by itself but I’m pretty good about my skincare routine. It is absolutely one of the best formulas we have.
Q: How about for a 20-something year old who is just starting her anti-aging routine? What product would you recommend to her?
A: Probably the Ultra Facial Line, because what you find when you’re younger is that your skin goes through a lot of changes all the time, added to that you’re inside here, then outside there, then you get into a taxi or a car, and your skin is changing like 48 times. Ultra Facial keeps it balanced and hydrated for most of the day.
Q: What is the step in the skincare regimen women are most likely to step, and what’s the most important?
A: Eye cream, and they need to not.
Q: Favorite Kiehl’s product for eyes?
A: Cryste Marine. It is the bomb of eye creams. You can’t dab. You really have to sweep that one up.
Q: How do you set Kiehl’s apart from other skincare and beauty lines? What’s something that Kiehl’s really strives for?
A: Quality. Period. I don’t get tripped up on my own press. I can separate that. Because at the end of the day my obligation, as an American company, is to my consumer. I have to deliver the best product or people will just stop buying it. But you can’t take your eye off the ball. It’s gotta be quality first and be careful with pricing. I don’t advertise. And the most important thing at the end of the day is that we’re made in the US and I’m proud of that.
