We always thought that hell would freeze over before fashion and football found common ground. Well, on January 7, it appears that both of those things have actually happened.
As our favorite (and not-so-favorite) football teams fight it out to make their way to Super Bowl XLVIII, leading fashion designers have taken to the field. The fashion field, that is. In anticipation of the February 2nd game, which will be played in the New York area for the first time at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, Bloomingdale’s will showcase a host of haute couture football helmets designed by CFDA members, in conjunction with the NFL and Bloomingdale’s. Like we said, haven’t you been really, really cold lately?
So now that DVF, Betsey Johnson, John Varvatos, Olivier Theyskens, Donna Karan, Nicole Miller, Dennis Basso, Georgina Chapman, Richard Chai, Kenneth Cole, Badgley Mischka, Cynthia Rowley, Narciso Rodriguez, Alexis Bittar and more are involved in football, it’s safe to say we’re interested. “The designers really went all out, from vintage-looking helmets to statements with color, flowers, sequins and Swarovski crystals,” said Steven Kolb (via WWD), CEO of the CFDA. “It’s been a fun opportunity to be involved in something that celebrates this huge event in New York, short of being on the 50-yard line and watching the game itself.” With helmets decked out in beads, faux-hawks, rosebuds and leopard print, we’re considering ourselves bona-fide fashionista football fans.
Since the Super Bowl made its way over to the most fashion-centric city in the country, it only makes sense that the NFL is tapping into our world. On January 15th, Bloomingdale’s will unveil the helmets in the windows of its flagship on 59th Street, complete with a tailgating party. The sports-meets-style pieces of art will then be auctioned off (on Bloomingdales.com/superbowlhelmets through February 4th) to support the NFL Foundation. Additionally, Macy’s will have the official NFL Super Bowl shop at its Herald Square flagship store, complete with events, music and food that fans can enjoy up to four days prior to the big game.
Between haute helmets and Super Bowl merchandise geared towards the fashion set, the NFL is certainly giving us something other than Fashion Week to get excited about this February. With the Super Bowl’s New York-style makeover, you can expect to see us sitting on the couch right next to the boys this year, beer in-hand – but we can’t promise that we won’t be wearing fur and heels.
