How to Play with Plaid this Fall
By Katherine Fotinos
October 03, 2012
It’s not just farmer fashion anymore; this autumn, we’re mad about plaid. With three new ways to wear this timeless print, you’ll be sure to keep warm and look hot in this season’s latest trend. 1. Mixing plaids is acceptable, but there are things to keep in mind to avoid overdoing it. While we’re mad about plaid, we don’t want to look mad in plaid, so if you are daring enough to mix it up, do it so your colors complement each other. Neutral hues work best together, like this iron colored Alternative Apparel top over a lighter grey pair of trousers by Cheap Monday. If you want to mix plaid with another print, keep the same rules about color balance in mind. Subtle printed tights, like Foot Traffic’s sheer dotted nylons add a bit of fun to a plaid dress. 2. While a cozy button down plaid is never wrong, try a modern twist on the classic flannel with a cutout detail. Exposed shoulders are all the rage, ranging from completely bare humeri styles to more subtle skin peeks. Pair over some dark wash jeans and you favorite boots- you can’t go wrong. 3. Plaid details are everywhere this fall, providing for a more understated way to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe. T.U.K’s black suede creepers feature a red plaid panel, a small ode to the trend that makes for a big statement. To keep things interesting, find a neutral coat or jacket with plaid lining, like Quicksilver’s hooded blazer. Pair both pieces, separately or together, with a pair of black opaque tights and a mini shift in tune with fall.
