Since relocating from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center, New York Fashion Week has been met with disdain from locals who think that the bi-yearly event takes away Damrosch Park from them.
Enter the Council of Fashion Designers of America and president, Diane von Furstenberg. Lady von Furstenberg wants a permanent home for the fashion wares display, and whatever DVF wants, DVF gets…
In 2006, the designer famous for her wrap dresses met with New York’s then-deputy mayor Dan Doctoroff, Women’s Wear Daily reports. “He asked me what I wished for, and I said, ‘Give us a pier for fashion week.’ Dan smiled and we started to talk. The idea of Culture Shed was born.”
Culture Shed is a new multipurpose center to be built at Hudson Yards. “I’m super excited about the Culture Shed,” von Fursenberg told the trade. “It will be a huge cultural center, and yes, a wonderful place for fashion week.”
“Our interest is not in being producers of fashion week, but that the infrastructure complements the needs of designers,” Steven Kolb, chief executive officer of the CFDA, said.
We, for one, are excited to see this come to life!
