John Galliano Gets Second Chance with Help from Oscar de la Renta

By  January 18, 2013

John Galliano has been given a second chance to re-enter the fashion world thanks to Oscar de la Renta. The disgraced designer has been invited to spend three weeks with de la Renta in his New York design studio.

The controversial move was confirmed by Erika Bearman, aka OscarPRGirl, and may mark the biggest comeback since Coco Chanel, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Galliano’s 2011 scandal initially lead to his dismissal from Dior and moved him into obscurity, but the designer has worked on his sobriety, made amends, and continued to create, even designing Kate Moss’s wedding gown that same year.

Many are warming up to the idea of Galliano’s return as the Anti Defamation League has welcomed the move that is believed to have been sparked by Anna Wintour. Galliano was humbled by de la Renta’s invitation. “I am grateful to Oscar beyond words for inviting me to spend time with him in the familiar surroundings of a design studio he said. “His support and faith in me is humbling.”

De la renta was happy to offer a second chance to a designer whose talents he admired. “He has worked long and hard on his recovery and I am happy to give him the opportunity to reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in a environment where he has been so creative,” he explained to the publication. “Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John. I think that life is about forgiving and helping people…I think John is doing all the right things.”

Update: Women’s Wear Daily is reporting that Galliano is added little touches here and there to the styling of de la Renta’s upcoming collection and may even take a bow with the designer when the looks walk the runway on Feb.12th. While will have to wait and see if the rumors are true, it certainly ups the anticipation for the show!
