Kerry Washington Wore Sweats When She Was Named Best Dressed

131003_Kerry-Scandal-at-SaksPoised in Prada doesn’t even begin to describe the aspirational air that Kerry Washington possesses in person. Still, even the world’s best dressed woman tends to tone it down.

“When that was announced, that day, I went to work in sweats,” she told GLAM of the People magazine honor at last night’s Scandal at Saks celebration. “My goal has never been to wind up on anybody’s list. It’s always been to have a really good time… and I’m glad people like it.”

Liking it is an understatement. While Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo has laced Olivia Pope in lengthy leather gloves, lime green Max Mara suits, and her proverbial white hat, it’s the real-life Washington who’s risen in high style rank. It’s levels to this, after all.

From purveying Vera Wang-worthy punk at this summer’s Met Gala to serving a marvelous Marchesa moment at the Emmys, she’s as chic in the flesh as her critically-acclaimed character has been on screen. Couple that with her growing stock of fashion magazine covers (ELLEVanity Fair, and FLARE for starters); sought-after prowess on Project Runway; and connection with some of our favorite designers (oh, hey Alexander Wang); and you’ve got the perfect recipe for what sartorial splendor is made of.

So how can you muster up Pope-approved swagger? Simple.

“[I] make sure that I’m happy when I go out the red carpet,” Washington added about her covetable style. “So that’s going to continue to be my goal.”

Consider it handled.
