Ten years after the United Nation’s tragic loss of leading humanitarian Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the altruistic arm continues its celebration of helping hands around the world. Today, World Humanitarian Day gets a boost from Beyoncé and a pint-sized personality who could one day rule the world.
Ten-year-old Robby Novak, the Internet sensation otherwise known as Kid President, sat down for an exclusive interview with Bey for the UN’s latest philanthropic campaign “The World Needs More ___.” Under the initiative, brands and celebrities like Gucci, Barclays, Paulo Coelho, and Cat Deeley will celebrate aid workers who’ve given their lives to curb humanitarian crises by turning hashtags into funding for various causes. Beyoncé’s buzzword, for instance, involves the need to flex.
“The world needs more strong, empowered men and women,” the grown woman shared. “So I’d say the world needs more strength.”
“This year, humanitarian agencies are trying to help more than 70 million people,” UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos said of the social media movement. “We know that humanitarian needs are growing and that if we are to meet those rising needs we must do things differently. We have to keep engaging with new partners and supporters. This campaign is a chance to do that.”
Those sentiments mirror last year’s WHD campaign, where Beyoncé encouraged more than 1 billion people to pledge acts of kindness across Facebook and Twitter.
“This new ‘marketplace for words’ harnesses the collective voice of many and allows corporations to give on behalf of their consumer,” added Leo Burnett advertising exec Jay Benjamin. “It’s a new approach to fundraising and corporate social responsibility that brings the world together around common beliefs.”
