Lifetime’s producers of Project Runway know how to make it work. They also know that reality television is a goldmine, hence the network’s order of three new, unscripted series, including a spin-off of the popular fashion competition.
New mom Vanessa Simmons has signed on to host Threads, a Lifetime original that pits teen designers against one another to determine who can “set the new standard for the future of fashion.” Project Runway alum Christian Siriano will join Seventeen fashion director Gina Kelly and YouTube sensation Ingrid Nilsen as the show’s judging panel, ultimately determining the fate of its adolescent contenders.
The project promises to include fast-paced challenges that are “far from child’s play,” culminating in an impressive grand prize. In addition to a $10,000 spree at Jo-Ann’s Fabrics & Crafts, the fledgling creatives will earn a scholarship to Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, a sewing and embroidery studio from Brother International Corporation, and the chance to impress guest judges Kelly Osbourne, Zendaya, and Jaime King.
Simmons, who dabbled in reality TV with her family’s Run’s House era on MTV, currently stars in an independent web series called Mixed that follows a “bi-racial conservative girl in a liberal world.” Meanwhile, Siriano, who’s become quite the New York Fashion Week favorite, is just about ready to debut his Resort 2015 collection. It’ll be interesting to see him on this side of the runway. Perhaps Tim Gunn has offered up some advice?!
