Those who arrived at the South Street Seaport yesterday evening for the Matthew Williamson for H&M summer collection launch were greeted by dozens of soluting sailors and a yacht aglow in pink. The Majesty awaited. Once on board, guests like Lucy Lui, Chanel Iman, David Schwimmer, and Selita Ebanks were greeted by pina coladas served in pineapples, mojio macaroons and enough rum to go around. “I feel like I just stepped into a Hawaiian vacation, this is kind of overwhelming,” said Alexis Bledel. Williamson arrived on the arm of Daria Werbowy, who was wearing one of his sold out designs. The duo sat in the VIP area alongside Mary-Kate Olsen and Lily Donaldson enjoying tropical cocktails.
Fashion folk arrived in droves. Patricia Field took her spot in a dance cage waiting for Grace Jones to hit the stage. Erin Fetherston, Richie Rich, Yigal Azrouel, Helena Christensen, and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld also hit the ship’s deck. Seventeen magazine’s editor-in-chief Ann Shoket was thrilled with the optimistic scene as were a slew of other editors, who took a turn in the retro photo booth. Ebanks weighed the merits of a mini ice cream cone vs. a sweet beverage. “Is this really worth it?” she asked. “I think it is, when I go home to Cayman we go from island bar to island bar so this is sort of like that.” Most guests opted for the drinks as the champagne quickly ran out. Jones eventually arrived in a cat mask and cape, heading straight to prep for her performance. She finally took to the stage after descending into the atrium in a glass elevator; the crowd roared in excitement. We couldn’t help but marvel at the joy and excitement, that felt very booming 1980s Miami; a few more of these parties could do wonders for the New York spirit. Though the boat never left the dock, it was certainly rocking. ~Nola Weinstein
