Michelle Smith, the designer behind Milly by Michelle, is taking things to the dark side for her Fall 2014 collection. Or, the dusk side, we should say.

“It’s a different mood,” Smith told Glam backstage at Lincoln Center before her collection made its debut. “This collection I named ‘dusk’ and it’s the colors of nightfall—so there is a moodiness to [the clothing].”

“I still love using technical fabrics, but I brought in a lot more traditional fabrics as well, such as lace, in a modern way: re-pleating them, re-embroidering them, the finish on leather, the sequins

Speaking of sequins (we spied several shiny pieces on her racks), we asked the mother-of-two how we could not only dress down sequins, but make the trend more edgy and less cute-sy. Using her look as a reference, she said, “I’m wearing a sequin dress but I actually have a black cashmere sweater of it. So, find something matte or textural to dress it down.”

Done and Done, Michelle!
