Music Musings: Lady Gaga Gives an Early Round of ‘Applause’

By  August 12, 2013

Earlier this morning, the music world entered a Lady Gaga-induced “POP MUSIC EMERGENCY,” emphasis on all caps. A minimalistic Mother Monster, fresh off her collaboration with performing artist Marina Abramovic, announced to her nearly 40 million Twitter followers that the wait for “Applause” was over.

Leaks of her first ARTPOP single emerged over the weekend, summoning Gaga’s Haus Bureau and legion of loyal fans to embark on an anti-piracy campaign in conjunction with her label, Universal Music. Ultimately, Gaga made the choice to debut the single today, one week earlier than its original August 19 reveal.

The infectious dance track opens with Gaga countering criticism of “is it right or is it wrong,” then crescendos with her admission of living for the “applause, applause, applause.” “It’s just a fun song,” like producer DJ White Shadow told Rolling Stone, making it a stark contrast from her rumored “Burqa” recording. “There’s no political commentary,” he added. “I watch people’s toes and they tap.”

This release doesn’t curb any enthusiasm for her ARTPOP entry though; next Monday, she’s still slated to unveil the music video for “Applause,” which was shot by her dynamic duo du jour Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.
