As The Marshall Mathers LP 2 nears 750,000 units sold in its first week and an uncontested number one spot on the Billboard 200, Eminem cemented his “Rap God” status during Sunday night’s 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards. The celebrated emcee tied with Austin Mahone for the most award wins, two, beating out likely contenders Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who held the highest number of nominations with five each.
“I just want to say thank you to everybody man, for everything over the years,” the Detroit native shared as he received the night’s top honor, the Global Icon award. The accolade comes 13 years after his first Marshall Mathers LP, which earned his second Best Rap Album Grammy and sold more than 27 million copies worldwide.
Not one to be upstaged, Miley Cyrus gave another, ahem, memorable MTV performance (remember Brooklyn!), before winning the Best Video Award for “Wrecking Ball.” She joined EDM master Avicii, the boy wonders of One Direction, and PRISM‘s Katy Perry as the ceremony’s big wins.
