Nanette Lepore Puts New York Fashion on the Map at the de Blasio Inauguration

By  January 02, 2014

deBlasioAs we watched Bill de Blasio be sworn in as New York’s 109th mayor on Wednesday, we couldn’t help but consider what his inauguration might mean for the fashion industry. His wife and daughter’s wardrobe choices helped us sort that out.

Chirlane McCray and the couple’s daughter Chiara de Blasio both wore Nanette Lepore – a New York-based designer who has been vocal about the need to bring fashion back to the city by manufacturing it here. A year ago, Lepore invited the de Blasio family to her studio to discuss her passionate efforts to preserve the Garment District. When they reached out to Lepore a few weeks ago to request clothing for the inauguration, the designer was eager to oblige. Excited about the de Blasio family’s support of not only her designs but of the Garment District as a whole. Lepore told WWD, “I think he will celebrate the New York that we all miss – the New York that we moved here for, the New York of diversity and craftsmanship. Hopefully, he will be about supporting more industries and not a few.”

Well, if the de Blasio ladies did, in fact, rip a page out of Michelle Obama’s book by donning designs that carry some sort of political significance, we’re just as eager as Lepore is to see what might be in store for the city’s Garment District. As for getting your hands on the lovely raspberry Skyscrape and velveteen leopard-print coats that Chirlane and Chiara (respectively) wore, head over to Nanette Lepore’s website and get ‘em while they’re hot!
