Did you know that today is National Watermelon Day?… Neither did I. At least not until I read today’s post on Fete a Fete. Mmmm… Watermelon. What’s not to love? It’s cold, refreshing, and sweet as candy. It’s one of my favorite summer indulgences… and the kicker is: it’s not really an indulgence. I can splurge to my heart and tummy’s content without an ounce of post-gluttony guilt.
You want to hear my embarrassing watermelon admission? Since I was a little kid, every time I felt sick or nauseous, I would chant “watermelon, watermelon, watermelon” to myself. I would picture a big juicy, sweaty slice in my head. And, for some crazy reason, it would help to alleviate my symptoms.
Last week after way too much wine and way too little food in Napa Valley (more on that later!), I wasn’t feeling too hot. I passed out on the bed of a poolside cabana at the beautiful Villagio Hotel and Spa and thought about every possible way to eat a watermelon. (You can scoop out the center, you can slice it in wedges, you can cut it into chunks…) After a few minutes of daydreaming, I opened my eyes to find my fiancé (that’s still so weird) standing over me with a knife and a whole watermelon in hand. He knows me too well. He cut it in half and gave me a spoon so I could just dig right in. I’ve never loved him more. And it cured me. (Seriously. Try it the next time you have a hangover.)
