#NYFW Fall 2012: Ethereal and Luminous at Marchesa

By  February 16, 2012

Marchesa’s Fall 2012 collection sent us on a celestial campaign this fashion week: out with the brash and authoritative looks that powered down Lincoln Center runways, and in with an ethereal escape. Delicate lace, pleated silk, embroidery, and tulle trademarked the collection, inspired by William Adolphe Bouguereaus’ 1878 painting, “A Soul Brought to Heaven.”

That effervescent essence carried on from the clothes to the countenance. Talia Shobrook, the show’s lead makeup artist, built her “vision of an angel, brought to life through a luminous palette,” using pearly products from Laura Mercier. The lasting effect: a clear, dewy, picture-perfect face.

Shobrook started with producing “iridescent, porcelain skin,” that “evoked the untouched perfect of angels,” using Laura Mercier’s Mega-Moisturizer Crème. She primed the models skin with a mix of the brand’s Hydrating Foundation Primer and Foundation Primer Radiance, before applying its Silk Crème Foundation for a lustrous base. To enhance the cherubic look, Shobrook contoured the models’ cheeks with a darker shade of the Laura Mercier’s new Eye Canvas (in EC-4 or EC-5), which she also used on their lids. She then used the rest of her primer package as a highlight to seal in her models’ incandescent glow.

Eyes were the shining glory for the beauty look. Shobrook topped off the Eye Canvas base by lining the models’ eyes with the Laura Mercier Illuminating Eye Colour in Gilded Moonshine, which comes out in the fall. She then applied Center Faux Lashes and several coats of Full Blown Lash Building Mascara. The result was a bare look with the perfect shimmery accent to make the eyes pop without an unnatural, forced glare.

Last, but not least, the lips. Sholbrook stained the models’ pouts with Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Merlot and Haute Red (hitting shelves in the fall), then used her fingertips to bleed the color outward — no goopy gloss or sheen. While the final look was divine enough for the catwalk, it’s also a great high-fashion beauty regime that can be used day to day.
