After taking a road trip, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs were inspired by the stunning landscapes and got to work on their latest collection. Chock full of Native American references (each model sported a single feather in her hair) the Cushnie et Ochs Fall 2011 collection celebrated the wandering world traveler. We caught up with the duo backstage to chat about the road trip that started it all.
What was the starting point for this collection?
Carly: It was really about traveling. We had gone on a road trip and then it became about this traveling vagabond but cleaned up and urbanized. We looked at Native American silhouettes and a lot of the details, like the elastic boning, came from that.
Was your road trip cross-country?
Michelle: Well, it was a bit shorter than cross-country. Just from L.A. to Vegas! It was a lot of fun.
Favorite stops along the way?
Carly: We loved driving in the car more than anything.
Michelle: It was a Mustang convertible. There was a lot of hair blowing in the wind going on. And we wore long scarves to get the full effect.
What was something new you wanted to play around with?
Michelle: We do a lot of body-con dresses and longer lengths, and we really wanted to play around with tailoring. Everything that was stretch was still very tailored.
And how do you celebrate post-show?
Carly: Food and drink, always. But we don’t have restaurant reservations tonight. We’re actually headed back to the studio!
