Celebs are usually the first to try the latest beauty innovations and adhere to regimens to keep their skin looking healthy and youthful. But Nicole Richie makes her own rules.

She’s one of many celebs who visit dermatologist to the stars Dr. Harold Lancer, at the recommendation of her parents, and uses all of his products except for one important one: sunscreen. “He gave me the talk to stay out of the sun and gave me a few products as a preventive measure,” she told The New York Times. “Now, in the morning I use his cleanser, polish and moisturizer. That’s it for my face. I don’t use SPF. Dr. Lancer is on my case about it, but my parents told me ‘black don’t crack.’”

With Skin Cancer Awareness month kicking off today, she might want to add the skincare savior to her arsenal, as the Skin Cancer Foundation found more than 2 million people are diagnosed with the disease annually. Thankfully she isn’t as laissez-faire when it comes to the rest of her routine, she nourishes the rest of her skin with a combination of fragrant body oils and luxe lotions like Kiehl’s Crème de Corps and CeraVe.

The #CandidlyNicole star keeps the heavy makeup experimentation reserved for the red carpet, only using Clé de Peau concealer, CoverGirl mascara, and Lucas’ Pawpaw ointment on an everyday basis. “It’s not something that I get to do in my everyday life, but it’s fun to get dressed from head-to-toe,” Richie said. “For me it’s not just about the clothes, it’s also about hair and beauty. What is the overall look? How are you going to make a piece look different?”

As for the rest of her beauty philosophy? “My attitude with beauty and hair is that it’s temporary: you can always change it,” she said. Our feelings exactly, Nicole!
