#PFW: Rockin’ Out at Jean Paul Gaultier SS11

Jean Paul Gaultier is well-known for his eccentrically futuristic designs, but for his SS11 catwalk show during Paris Fashion Week, he did a complete 180° and went rather retro. 80′s pretty-in-punk is what we’d call it; cropped leather motorcycle jackets worn with slashed skinny denims, mini-shorts over fishnets, lace tights with bustiers, et al. And then there was the hair.

Gaultier collaborated up with Guido, Redken’s Creative Consultant, to capture the essence of the rock ‘n roll collection, and spiky mullets—à la Joan Jett—was what they came up with.”She’s a very 80s chick—very rock and roll’” says Guido. “And she’s not perfect at all. She looks like she’s just rolled out of bed!”

Instead of cutting each model’s hair (which we’re pretty sure they wouldn’t have happily obliged), wigs were used. “Wigs are inexpensive, a lot of fun, and of the moment,” says Guido. “Plus, with wigs, you can be a different person.”

Most were black, some were colorful, like auburn or lavender, and a select few were platinum. To save time, Guido pre-cut each wig on a mannequin head, then trimmed them to frame each model’s face perfectly. Not much product was used–or even necessary. Once the wigs were in place, Guido misted each model’s faux mane with Redken Forceful 23, which gave each wig superior hold and a shiny finish.
