Prada’s Designs for The Great Gatsby: A First Look!

By  January 22, 2013

Thanks to trailers, we’ve already been afforded a first peek at Miuccia Prada‘s designs for The Great Gatsby, but as we anticipate the May release, here’s a deeper dive into her creations.

To make up the 40 featured dresses in the film, Prada adapted existing Prada and Miu Miu originals to showcase the feeling of European flair on the East Coast in the 1920s. “Baz [Luhrmann] and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past,” said Catherine Martin, the film’s costume designer. “This connection is central to our relationship with Miuccia Prada on The Great Gatsby , and has connected our vision with hers. In the same way Nick Carraway reflects on a world that he is within and without, we have tried to create an environment that the audience will be subconsciously familiar with, yet separated from.”

Between Luhrmann’s aesthetic and the decadence that comes along with the plot line, the film’s costume design had to stand out and be distinct. With classic Prada and Miu Miu trimmings and details, Daisy Buchanan’s costumes are set to be as memorable as the character’s personality.
