David Archuleta and David Cook will battle it out in next weeks American Idol finale, after a less than surprising elimination show Wednesday that sent Syesha Mercado home.

I dont know what to say, a beaming Mercado replied, when Ryan Seacrest asked her to address the judges and the fans after learning her fate. I just want to say thank you. She looked more proud than disappointed to have made it so far after so many close calls along the way. For her final performance in the competition, Syesha sang If I Aint Got You by Alicia Keys.

It was a happy ending to an emotional hour that recapped Tuesdays grueling three-song sets and featured moving video footage of the contestants hometown visits. The Idol producers even played each of their farewell videos tracing David, David and Syeshas journeys on the show because, as Ryan said, its a very, very close race.

It may be close, but it was hardly surprising to see Syesha say goodbye. She failed to impress the judges on Tuesday with the song of her choice, Peggy Lees Fever, which Simon called a lame cabaret performance. Even Paula said, I dont know if its going to be good enough to get into the finals.

As for next weeks battle of the Davids, Simon predicted, Were going to have a real humdinger.

Jessica Simpson: you’ve got competition!

New photos have surfaced on PerezHilton.com that show her beau Tony Romo getting cozy with a tan blonde at Chicago club Manor over the weekend.

Perez reports that “five to six girls from Hooters” including the woman he’s seen whispering into the ear of partied with Romo, 28, and his pals.

Us Weekly reports in its latest issue, on newsstands now, that Romo announced to his friends that night: “We are broken up.”

The night Romo partied in Chicago, the new issue Us Weekly reports that Simpson was drinking away her sorrows at the same time ex John Mayer’s public debut with Jennifer Aniston.

As Mayer and Aniston hit her Marley & Me wrap party in Miami, the 27-year-old Simpson went on a four-hour drinking spree with pals at L.A.’s Mexicali Cocina Cantina.

Simpson was so out of it that she had to ditch her Range Rover in the parking lot and call her mom for a ride home.

A rep for Simpson told Us, the singer is “very happy with Tonythey are both happy together.”

The new issue of Us Weekly, on newsstands Friday, reports that Jessica Simpson got good and drunk as John Mayer, the guy who broke her heart, went public with his new relationship with Jennifer Aniston last week.

The 27-year-old singer was so out of it after a four-hour session of drinking at L.A.’s Mexicali Cocina Cantina on May 10 which started at the pre-happy hour of 4 p.m. with BFF CaCee Cobb and her beau Donald Faison that she was reduced to leaving her Range Rover in the parking lot and calling her mom Tina for a ride home, Us reports (for good measure, CaCee Cobb threw up under the table); that same night, Us Weekly also reports that beau Tony Romo partied solo in Chicago and was overheard telling friends he was single again.

Across the country, Mayer and Aniston went public with their relationship holding hands and kissing affectionately at the Marley & Me cast party in Miami.

KANYE West’s Tuesday night concert at Madison Square Garden turned into a nightmare for celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch, who was manhandled and thrown out by three security guards before it even started.

Rihanna, West’s opening act, was performing around 9 p.m. when Bloch - whose clients include John Travolta and Salma Hayek - was approached by a tall security guard who ordered him to “take a walk with me.” Bloch, who had earlier lit a cigarette but quickly stubbed it out unnoticed, had been talking to a group of pot-smoking teenagers in the row behind him who were passing a pipe among themselves.

“The whole stadium smelled like pot, and the kids behind us were smoking. I’m sitting there having fun, laughing,” said Bloch. “Then I get an order to go with this man.

“They say, ‘You’re leaving, give us your ticket.’ I held it up, they took it. At that point they grabbed me by my arms to take me out, so I threw my hands up and said, ‘You’ve got to keep off me. I’m no threat.’ ”

Page Six witnessed three security guards then spin Bloch around and pin him against the corridor wall. One, who refused to give us his name and flipped his identity pass around so we couldn’t see it, gave Bloch a sharp jab in the left rib.

“I had nothing in my pockets, not even a match. They never asked for ID, never asked for my name. It was complete brutality,” said Bloch, who was tossed out a side door. “One pushed me out with his knee in my back. I still can’t wrap my head around this.”

Butter owner Richie Akiva and a gal pal were also stopped on their way backstage. “Security grabbed the girl and yanked her,” said a witness. “The guards got hot-headed and he was sticking up for her. They took him to a room to interrogate him.”

“MSG policy is if you are caught smoking an illegal substance it’s cause for immediate ejection,” said Garden rep Barry Watkins.

MICHELLE Trachtenberg , the new villainess on “Gossip Girl,” full-on fainted Tuesday night in the middle of the party she was hosting at the new Sunglass Hut store in SoHo. Like some Victorian heroine with the vapors, the lush-lipped actress, in a glamorous Diane von Furstenberg dress, swooned at 8 p.m., but gamely partied on until the bash ended an hour later. In fact, she was seen later, much later, at 1Oak.
