Okay. So all the spoilers are pointing towards a Whitney win. I’m really torn about this. I’d love, love, love to see a plus-sized girl win. I really would. But out of the three girls left, Whitney is the weakest model. Her pictures are largely mediocre, her walk needs work and she comes across as fake and pageant-y during commercials. However, she’ll have a final Covergirl commercial to prove this wrong tonight. And–to top this all off–there were no go-sees. You know Whitney would have done terribly at the go-sees, simply based on the fact she is plus-sized. (Unless Tyra and co. decided to include designers who do plus-sized garments regularly or cater to a plus-sized clientele). I can’t help but wonder if the go-sees were intentionally eliminated as part of the competition so that Whitney’s chances to get into the final three–and possibly win–would greatly improve.
If not, then the only other possibility is that Tyra had a really hard time finding Italian designers to agree to participate, which really proves the lack of credibility this show has.
But here’s why I’m okay with Whitney winning, should she win. The Top Model winners rarely go on to be real models. It’s always the girls who get eliminated later–Elyse and Mollie-Sue are two examples–of girls who go on to become real models. Therefore, should Whitney win, she’d make a fantastic role model for girls out there, especially younger girls whose only exposure to the fashion industry is largely ANTM and Seventeen, leaving Anya and Fatima the opportunity to follow real modeling careers.
Then again, Alice Burdeu of Australia’s Next Top Model proved if you pick the right girl, she’ll fly to the top. That is, if the winner is based on modeling potential and industry expectations and not some bizarre Tyra-based formula that does little more than propel girls to the forefront VH1.
Okay, giant, possibly incoherent, rant over. The show is about to begin.
Can Anya look and act the part of a top model? Can Fatima listen up and learn? Can Whitney fix her flaws? Who writes these questions?
I wonder if they’ll keep the new song and intro look for the next cycle. I really like it, it feels a lot more modern and fashion-forward than the old one. Or maybe they’ll mix it up again.
