Rita Ora, face of DKNY’s MYNY fragrance, in custom Donna Karan atelier, of course.
This is 45! Jennifer Lopez sizzles in silver Charbel Zoe paired with Jimmy Choo shoes.
Twerking novice Miley Cyrus toned things down for this year’s VMAs in a leather bandeau and matching harem pant from Alexandre Vauthier fall 2014 couture.
Sarah Hyland stepped out, and into an increasingly sophisticated style, in a KAUFMANFRANCO gown and Stuart Weitzman sandals.
Nicki Minaj channeled her inner “Anaconda,” and appropriately so, in this rather demure snakeskin mini.
Her “Bang Bang” cohort Ariana Grande, signature ponytail in tact, turned up, and out, in this leather Moschino mini.
Fellow “Bang Bang” belter Jessie J stunned in this vintage Halston gown. Green goddess, no?!
Salute! Here, model Jourdan Dunn strikes a pose in Balmain.
Her “Yoncé” co-star Chanel Iman followed suit in a Balmain body con dress from Olivier Rousteing... as did supermodel Joan Smalls.
Iggy Azalea caught on to J. Lo’s silver streak in this custom Versace gown. Slick.
Jordin Sparks matched beau Jason Derulo in radiant white.
If we walked out of H&M looking as good as Solange does in this sparkling tux, we’d never have an off day.
Put a “Hollaback Girl” in hot pink and you get Gwen Stefani’s borrowed from the boys look. Extra points since it’s from her own line, L.A.M.B.!!
We’re used to seeing Demi Lovato go rocker chic, but tonight, she looked ravishing in a red, low-cut Lanvin gown.
You glow girl! Mommy-to-be Kelly Rowland showed off her baby bump in this nude gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.
Sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner went vampy in all-black-everything, a sheer Alon Livné jumpsuit with thigh-high slits. And, they look pretty good.
So did big sis Kim Kardashian—don’t forget the West. And, due to her newfound friendship with Balmain’s creative director, it’s no surprise she opted for this sheath.
We couldn’t forget the boys, rather this one. Sam Smith suited up in this three-piece Gucci suit and matching leather monk strap shoes.
Save-the-best-for-last-Beyoncé didn’t walk the carpet with the rest of the night’s performers, guests, and nominees, but she managed to show stop in a Nicolas Jebran gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.
As the world awaits who’ll take home a moonman or two at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards, winners are already captivating its red carpet. Unlike the elegant Academy Awards and dress-code abiding Grammys, the VMAs carpet is one where musicians and celebrities showcase the more extreme, unconventional side of their personal style—like Lil Kim in this at the 1999 show, and Lady Gaga’s meat dress circa 2010. Still, there are sartorial victories, and tonight, plenty of A-listers are stepping up—in Brian Atwood and Christian Louboutin, no less—and garnering the right kind of attention.

Tonight, “Yoncé” crew, Jourdan DunnChanel Iman, and Joan Smalls, pledge their allegiance to the Balmain army, while Ariana Grande continues to shed the innocence of Nickelodeon years past in Moschino. We applaud their looks, as well as those from Jennifer LopezNicki MinajIggy Azalea, and more, who shot for the moon, and landed among the stars.
