Back in 2000, before anyone was keeping up with Kim Kardashian, she was 20 years old and keeping up with her 30-year-old husband record producer Damon Thomas. No, that’s not a pic of Kardashian at 20, and no, there aren’t many pics of the two together. They kept those under wraps, much like Kardashian did their marriage. They divorced in 2004, with Thomas labeling Kardashian a “compulsive shopper.”
Meanwhile, Kanye West was beaming with stylist Alexis Phifer, whom he had an on-again, off-again relationship with from 2002 to 2007.
The pair were engaged, and even landed a spread in Harper’s Bazaar, but sadly called off their union in 2007. Phifer later told People, “It’s always sad when things like this end, and we remain friends. I wish him the best in his future and all of his endeavors. He’s one of the most talented people I've ever met.”
We’re not saying Kardashian had anything to do with the breakup, but West did tell Ryan Seacrest back in April 2012 that he first fell for “Kim Kar-dijon” in 2006. Draw your own conclusions.
Then, in 2007, a 2003 “adult” tape surfaced with Kardashian and her then-boyfriend Ray J—you know, Brandy’s brother—partaking in some... intimate activity. It’s safe to say that helped catapult the reality star’s career.
In 2008, Kardashian played Princess Leia for West’s Alligator Boots puppet comedy. The show never saw the light of day.
The role wasn’t enough to woo Kardashian, who was happy with NFL baller Reggie Bush, chronicling their love in a March 2009 spread for GQ. It was entitled “The Saint and the Sinner.” Shade.
There’s this bit from Y-3’s Fall 2009 show at New York’s Pier 40 in February 2009. Awkward?
We’d say no, considering West had lady love Amber Rose to keep him occupied, and company after his mother’s unfortunate 2007 death. The bald-headed beast (as she’s affectionately called by some gossip blogs), told reporters that West saw her in a video for Ludacris, called her up, and flew her to L.A. to star in his own clip for “Robocop.” That, like West’s puppet show, was never released.
The attention-grabbing pair were seen here at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when West downed a bottle of Hennessy, then infamously stormed the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, arguing that Beyoncé had “one of the best videos of all time.” He had a point there. The couple would split the next year, Rose citing Kardashian as the “home wrecker” who broke them up.
Home wrecker or not, Kardashian still didn’t fill Rose’s void. She went on to date another footballer, this time, wide receiver Miles Austin.
Their time together was short-lived, as was Kardashian’s rendez-vous with Halle Berry’s child’s father, Gabriel Aubry.
Meanwhile, West went on a post-Rose dating spree with a bevy of models, reportedly including Nick Cannon and Terrence J’s ex Selita Ebanks. Their rumored union was amplified after she starred in his 2010 short film, “Runaway.”
Kardashian and West’s friendship still continued strong, though. Here, he came to support the buxom brunette on set for her one—and only!—music video, “Jam.” Proceeds for the purchase of the song were donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, but Kardashian would have probably done better by writing the organization a check.
West, who we wouldn’t peg as a fan of the cameras, later appeared on an episode of “Keeping up with the Kardashians” in October 2010. Was love finally blossoming?
Apparently not. Basketball player Kris Humphries beat West to the punch...
... and to the altar. He and Kardashian married in a lavish, $10 million ceremony, on August 20, 2011. Their marriage lasted for only 72 days.
Much to West’s delight, we’re sure. With her divorce looming, Kardashian made her way to the City of Light for West’s second Paris Fashion Week bow in March 2012. Enter the era of Kimye.
After sister Khloe Kardashian alluded to the pair’s budding romance in April 2012 on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Kardashian made an appearance in West’s video for “Cold.” “And I'll admit, I had fell in love with Kim/ Around the same time she had fell in love with him,” he raps.
That same month, the couple made their “public” debut during an ice cream run in New York City.
By May, Kardashian had a revamped wardrobe and court-side seats with West at an L.A. Lakers game. West even hung around for Kourtney Kardashian’s baby shower. Welcome to the fam!
And welcome to Cannes, Kimmie! Kardashian was West’s date for the May 2012 Cannes Film Festival debut of his new short film “Cruel Summer.”
KimYe made their way to Paris Fashion Week that July. Here, the pair were photographed leaving Stephane Rolland’s show, one that Kardashian described as “next level beautiful.”
The two somehow managed to vacation with friend Joe Francis in Mexico a month later. You know what they say... the couple that zip lines together...
... has a baby together! During his December 2012 tour stop in Atlantic City, New Jersey, West interrupted his own set to shout out his “baby mama.” Kardashian later confirmed the news on her blog, writing, “We feel so blessed and lucky and wish that in addition to both of our families, his mom and my dad could be here to celebrate this special time with us. Looking forward to great new beginnings in 2013 and to starting a family.”
The couple celebrated the news, and the New Year, at Las Vegas’ 1Oak. Pals John Legend and Chrissy Teigen were also in attendance.
They immortalized their love on the March 2013 cover of L’Officiel Hommes.
That same month, Kardashian immortalized her pregnancy with a Bruce Weber-shot cover for Du Jour.
On March 28, 2013, Kardashian appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, where she teased that she liked the name Easton West for her unborn child.
With her divorce from Humphries finalized in April 2013, Kardashian made her first appearance to the Met Gala that May alongside one of the evening’s best-dressed, Mr. West. Her look didn’t garner much praise, though designer Riccardo Tisci stands by the custom gown.
Which we (almost) forgot about on June 15, 2013, when the adorable North West was born. That same month, West told W magazine that “At a certain point, or always, love is more important than any branding,” defending his decision to unite with a reality TV star, and appear on her show.
Then, in October 2013, West rented out San Francisco’s AT&T Park for a Lana Del Rey-soundtracked proposal. It, of course, was televised. See previous slide for West explanation.
It was business as usual for the kouple who went about their merry ways, and interrupted ours with the cover seen ’round the world. A cover that Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour vehemently defended.
Rumors spread spanning every topic from Kardashian’s dress, to VIP guests, and even the high-profile location. This wedding invite emerged on May 10, offering little more detail to curb our enthusiasm.
Here, Kardashian and West, who’ve developed an affinity for coordinating outfits, arrive in Paris, France, on May 18, six days before they reportedly say “I Do” in Florence, Italy. Come May 24, we guess the only thing left to obsess over will be their honeymoon destination.

walking down the aisle, and into Kanye West’s arms until death do they part. But it took KimYe a number of years, and a whole lot of other high-profile relationships, to finally get it right. From failed marriages and called-off engagements, to the birth of North West and that disputed Met Gala gown in between, here’s a Hollywood love tale, fit only for the #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple.Read More ↓
