Glam: For your first designer collab, you decided to do denim. Why jeans instead of something else?

Liberty Ross: I'm really a denim girl--they are always some of the first pieces I go to in my closet--and I think a lot of women are the same way. You can style them up or down and everyone loves a pair of really good jeans. Plus having lived in LA for ten years, I was interested in working on something that I can make there. Denim is Los Angeles and when I met Ali Fatourechi [founder of Genetic], we really hit it off and a collaboration just made sense. I was already such a huge fan of the brand.

Glam: Tell us how this collection is different--in what ways can we see your personal aesthetic reflected in the designs?

LR: My life has always been about both London and LA, and I tried to weave the influences of those two cities throughout the collection. For example, the prints in the blazer and pants are inspired by my roller disco days in early LA, whereas the plaid print is London grunge Anglomania. And the gold hardware is what connects the two places together--it's exclusive to this collection and in all the pieces.

Glam: What makes a pair of jeans flattering?

LR: It's all the tiny little design things that you might not even think about--for example the shape of the yoke in the back down to how long the belt loops are. Where the pockets are placed are extremely important and where that falls in relation to the hips and the waist. It's a really interesting process and each little detail has been heavily refined to make sure that these jeans have the most flattering fit. For example, women just want their butt to look good in their jeans, and we've even taken into consideration just the right amount of stretch to enhance that figure.

Glam: How do you get that perfect model-off-duty look?

LR: Well denim is an obvious choice. And I think the easy way to do it is to have a pair of jeans that make a statement, because then you can make the rest of your outfit simple--for example a slouchy t-shirt, and you still have an outfit that is cool and fun, while not looking like it's trying too hard.
