If anybody can make camouflage look pretty, it's Lela Rose. For Spring 2013, Rose made tough and sexy pieces — biker vests, cocktail dresses, short suits — femme friendly with colorful camo prints, aristocratic touches of tweed, and lovely lace overlays. This look says I'm ready for a style war — and as pretty as I am, I will win.
Sturdy textiles like leather and cellophane got bold make overs at Derek Lam Spring 2013. Mixed prints, plaids, and asymmetrical layers highlighted Lam's latest, and infused Spring with unexpected tones like mustards and greens. This simple silhouette, for example, is as forward as fashion can be in an eye-popping, half-and-half print that is anything but ordinary.
Catherine Malandrino harkened back to the aristocratic age, pulling on inspiration from the romantic French era while staying true to a more timely American sportswear touch. In a collection that focused on intricate detailing, mesh cutouts, and a palette of mint green, pure whites, and frosted blues, Malandrino took our breath away. While separate and chic dresses dominated the collection - high waisted pants, cropped tops, studded vests, and form fitting dresses - she ended on a set of gowns that are sure to decorate red carpets in weeks to come.
Denim for the sophisticated set is what DKNY Spring 2013 capitalized on this season. Donna Karen, NYC's hometown style hero, coupled the wardrobe staple with sleek white skirts, classic button-ups with sheer effects, trench-length spring jackets, and her brand's metallic logo tees.
Juicy Couture founders Gela Nash Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy took fashion show guests on a train headed west on Sunday afternoon on the roof of the McKittrick Hotel at Fashion Week, proving that it's all happening. With a heavy emphasis on rock and roll, complete with shag jackets and over-the-knee laced boots, the Spring/Summer collection embodied all things bohemian with a distinct 70s era vibe. Accented with majorly teased and curled hair, models showed off a dresses and separates full of fringed details, drop waists, and eyelet touches.
Following Michelle Obama's entrance at the Democratic National Convention in custom Tracy Reese, we were delighted to find tropical prints, tribal beading, and slouchy leather slacks the shone in bright green and cerulean for Reese's Spring 2013. This great vibrant look is balanced out by Reese's take on the classic trench with mesh trim and black lining.
Custo Barcelona is full of gusto with colorful sets that intersect poppy hues, 3D textures, fanciful fringe, sequins, and bold graphics for daring Spring 2013 style (with looks for men, too!). Another cool Custo factor for the Leandre Medine's of the world: sheer plastic trains added on to sexy shorts.
For those who've yet to master to art of mixing prints, enter the world of Timo Weiland Spring 2013. Pair Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein played up houndstooth in a brighter pattern than the signature black-and-white one, and opted for zig-zagged prints in complimentary colors to coordinate. Other looks in the collection included all-white everything in reworked silhouettes (longer shirts, oversized pockets on button-ups), and head-to-toe peach for fashion forward gents.
Dresses over pants, vivid floral prints in nautical casts, and fiesty necklines that plunge for a flash of skin were abound at Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2013. Supermodel Joan Smalls exhibits the latter DVF Spring staple here, with a flowy pink skirt to balance out her bold blue and hot pink peek-toes.
Need some spring/summer color inspiration? When in doubt, go red, white, and blue. Those patriotic hues were present in just about every look American designer Tommy Hilfiger sent down the runway for Spring 2013, from swimwear and short sets to leather minidresses and classic cargos. Way to wear your colors proudly.
It's a beautiful Sunday at Lincoln Center and we're glad to say we made it through the first half of fashion week! Today was the perfect blend of preen and punk chic: from pretty designs coming from Lela Rose this morning, to funky prints and textures at Derek Lam, and the vibrant rush we've come to know and love at Spanish brand Custo Barcelona, we were in for a visual smorgasbord for the freshest Spring 2013 styles.
