Spend a Lovely Long Weekend in La Paz

We’ve got the inside track on Mexico’s most beautiful hidden treasure that’s destined to be a new hotspot locale.

Leave Cancun, Cozumel, and Acapulco to those in search of a nonstop fiesta. Affectionately known as “The City of Peace and Abundance on the Sea of Cortez,” La Paz is a charming seaside town nestled near the southeastern tip of the Baja Peninsula, a little over two hours north of Cabos San Lucas. Perfect for a quiet family holiday or a solitary personal retreat, La Paz is one of the safest vacation destinations Mexico has to offer.

Where to Stay: It doesn’t get better than Costa Baja Resort. This sprawling 5-star property sits right on the marina and is equipped with all of the top-notch amenities, including a Golf Club, Beach Club, swimming pool, and free resort-wide WiFi. Rates start from $159 for a King Room, and $369 for a Suite.

Where to Dine: Located directly across from the Sea of Cortez, at Palermo’s Ristorante you can indulge in delicious Mexican-Italian-Mediterranean fusion fare. Relish in the ambience with a glass of vino from the underground wine cellar, while listening to a piano virtuoso serenade patrons with romantic ballads. Feast on everything from sushi to wood fired pizza, but USDA Prime Aged Beef is their speciality.

What to Do: Gaze at the mesmerizing sunset over the gorgeous translucent aquamarine sea at the La Paz Malecón boardwalk. Grab an ice cream and take a leisurely stroll down the 6-mile promenade, relaxing along the way on a nostalgic white cast iron bench. Rent a pair of rollerblades or a bicycle, or accompany the kids to El Coromuel Water Park, complete with large water slides and a fishing pier.

If you’re on a quest for adventure, head over to Marina de La Paz and venture off on an excursion out to Isla Espiritu Santo / Ensanada Grande, an idyllic isolated beach 1.5 hours off of the Caribbean coast. Snorkel alongside the sea lions, fish for prime catch, or explore the vast marine life.

Get There: Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air offers a 3 hour flight thrice weekly from LAX, starting at $350 RT. Visit AlaskaAir.com for more information.
