• THE UTILITY JACKET || Instead of wearing it with your boyfriend jeans and Stan Smiths (yeah, we all do that look) take a cue from Alexa Chung and pair it with contrasting pieces such as a delicate crochet number and chunky black boots.

  • THE OFF-THE-SHOULDER TOP || Every other girl and her BFF is sporting the shoulder-baring top this season, but you don't need to avoid it altogether in fear of looking like a #basicbitch. Do like Olivia Palermo and team it with bold accessories like chunky gold bangles and a structured, colour-blocked handbag.

  • THE LEATHER JACKET || Like the utility jacket, to avoid the been-there-done-that look, refrain from teaming it with your favourite blues and instead rock yours with a feminine, flowy number. French style queen Caroline de Maigret dared to wear hers with a white, lightweight maxi and brown suede bag.

  • THE WHITE-SHIRT-AND-BOYFRIEND-JEANS COMBO || This look is the epitome of basic, but it's so classic, there's no avoiding it. Freshen up the way you wear it by teaming the duo with a bright bag, like Janni Delér and her cobalt blue Céline bag.

  • SUMMER FLORALS || We don't need Miranda Priestly to remind us that florals for spring aren't exactly "groundbreaking," but that won't stop us from wearing the warm weather's signature print. This season, go for one in a dark colour palette, and/or in an off-the-shoulder style. Extra style points if you team it with an edgy bag.

  • THE BLACK TURTLENECK || One of the most popular trends this season is wearing a black turtleneck tucked into a pair of jeans. This look is classic, and there's no reason to avoid it completely. Just make the look your own by topping it off with your favourite blazer or bomber jacket and a cool pair of steppers.

  • THE BLACK CREWNECK TOP || Although it's by far one of the most overworked items in your wardrobe, chances are it's not living up to its full potential. Instead of wearing it with jeans, trousers, or a pencil skirt, try a chiffon skirt (preferably in accordion pleats—a hot trend this season) and standout heels à la Alexa Chung.

  • THE GRAPHIC TEE || Some graphic tees need to be retired already (designer pun options like "Féline" or "Radarte" come to mine). But others can be worn in a preppy-chic way when paired with a raffia topper, cutoff denim, and a pair of lace-up espadrilles, as shown by Jacey Duprie of Damsel in Dior.

  • THE DENIM SKIRT || A denim skirt will be worked into most girls' wardrobe rotation this summer, so keep yours looking fresh by pairing it with a classic button-down shirt in blue or chambray.

  • THE MENSWEAR-INSPIRED BLAZER || This piece is all about how you wear it. Steal Caroline de Maigret's style and bunch the sleeves up to the elbows, then team it with nothing but menswear-inspired items for the ultimate cool-girl look.
