• On the age gymnasts start training: "Today, they are competing at 6. I didn't start competing until I was 9 or 10." —Dawes || "It's a good base for all kids; it will help them in any sport." —Comăneci || "Many start in mommy-and-me classes as soon as they can walk. When I have kids, they're not going to be in gymnastics. I'm already doing crazy things. I don't want them doing triple-backs." —Biles

  • The scoring system: "When I did gymnastics, there was a perfect 10. Now, there's open scoring. It's based on difficulty and execution. Last night, Simone got a 9.9 on execution! I'd never seen that." —Comăneci || "Now that the scoring system allows gymnasts to get credit for more difficulty, there are not many gymnasts who come close to [Simone]. What she's out there doing is unheard of." —Dawes

  • The equipment: "When I was competing, the vault was a horse. Now the beam is covered, and the floor is a lot springier." —Comăneci || "The equipment we trained on was different too. We didn't have the foam block pit or the tumble track." —Dawes || "I don't know how they did it. I look at their videos, and I tell my coach, 'If I was in their time, I wouldn't do gymnastics.' It was scary!" —Biles

Some can’t come up with six." —Comăneci || "The team selected during the trials may not be the team that walks out in Rio. Between the two, there are camps and competitions. I guarantee there will be changes." —Dawes

  • The team bond: "My team is very important to me. Honestly, I think we're stronger together than we are individually, which is rare." —Biles || "Today, social media allows the girls to connect with each other even when they're not training in the same town. During my Olympic games, it was very difficult to bond with the teams. There was respect, but there wasn't that bond." —Dawes

  • Olympic Village: "We had six or seven athletes in a room—now there are two. It's been upgraded." —Comăneci || "1992 was the only time I stayed in the Village. In ’96, our team was so popular, we were mobbed! We stayed at a university." —Dawes || "I remember seeing the Fierce Five's pictures. Yesterday, Laurie [Hernandez] and I were like, 'That's going to be us!' We couldn't stop crying." —Biles

  • Their style: "In my time, it was a ponytail and no makeup. They told us makeup would take away from what we did." —Comăneci || "Our look wasn't important. Gymnasts were the blue-collar athletes; figure skaters were the divas." —Dawes || "GK makes our leos—they always suit us up right. We love doing our makeup before a meet. Once we feel good and beautiful, we know we're gonna rock it." —Biles
