Style Setters: Social Media Influencers, Elizabeth Holmes
By Bianca Posterli September 20, 2012
As the style reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Eliabeth Holmes has a celebrated ability for creating viral content that’s engaging and enlightening, turning into an inevitable must-discuss at any cocktail party that evening. From the discussion of selfies to her newest creation – THIS videos – Elizabeth brings her beautiful prose and social media skills to the pages of the WSJ, translating directly into countless social shares.
What is the first social media platform you look at in the morning and the last you check before you go to bed at night?
I check Twitter first thing in the morning, before I even get out of bed. It has become my go-to source of news, both big and small. I also check it at night, for the same reason. During NYFW (and at other times!), I’m obsessed with the runway images on Instagram, so I keep a close eye there as well.
Who are your favorite five to follow?
I follow a slew of news outlets on Twitter—@WSJ is my fave! Among style tweeters, the handles I love the most are the ones manned by individuals with strong personalities. For fashion, I like the candor of Aliza Licht (@DKNY) and the snark of John Jannuzzi (@johnjannuzzi). I also admire what Eva Chen (@evachen212) does with beauty and what Cannon Hodge (@Bergdorfs) does in the retail space. When it comes to selfies, as my colleague Katie Rosman (@katierosman) pointed out, no one beats Tina Craig (@BagSnob)!
What hotspots will you be frequenting this season?
I’m usually racing between my apartment, a show and the office. I always end up spending quite a bit of time in the main tents, huddled near an electrical outlet charging my iPhone and posting photos to Instagram.
What new platform are you most excited to use during Fashion Week?
The WSJ has a great new push with video with Tout called WorldStream. It’s a stream of short video clips—max 45 seconds—done by reporters in the field showing where we are and what’s going on. The WSJ style team will be using it during fashion month, offering readers yet another way to experience the madness. Tune in!
What was your first Tweet?
I have no idea! But it wasn’t style-related, I can say that for certain. I signed up for Twitter in January 2009, shortly after I stopped covering politics for the WSJ and a few months before I began the corporate retail beat. My feed got infinitely more interesting once I started covering New York Fashion Week.
