Style That Saves: How to Revamp Last Season’s Looks

By  May 10, 2013

Knowing how to refashion last season’s clothes to create an updated look is not only smart styling—it’s a money-saving solution as well. Not every element needs to be ditched, so instead of purchasing an entire new wardrobe for spring, get creative with articles already in your closet and simply splurge on the handful of pieces that will make them even more warm-weather-appropriate. Here are our top six tips to help you prepare for a stylish new season … on a budget!

1. Keep the cardigans
This classic piece will be your go-to through the season’s breezy days and evenings—it can be effortlessly thrown over anything from sleeveless dresses to warm-weather tanks. Even knit pullover sweaters can make the transition into spring; layer them over light-color collared button-downs for a fresh look.

2. Lose the bulk but not the layers
During these transitional weeks, when it’s no longer winter yet not quite warm enough to completely lose the layers, store wool scarves, thick knit mittens, and winter coats and replace them with silk neck wraps, fashionable leather gloves, and a trench. There is such a thing as spring and summer layering, which is why it’s important to know what pieces and clothing elements can be styled together depending on the season.

3. Hold on to the booties
Last season’s most fashionable footwear, the ankle bootie, is still on our radar. A neutral pair can be styled throughout the seasons. Continue to wear them with skinnies, but try them with a spring skater dress and bare legs too.

4. Ditch dark-on-dark
It’s time to add a bit of brightness into your wardrobe. Don’t discard the darks completely, but make the effort to incorporate color into your spring look with standout accessories or subtle pops of pigment.

5. Try a new kind of leather
How hot was leather last season? Luckily, with colored leather being the newest trend to try, we won’t have to part ways with the material just yet. Black is classic, but pastels and brights—some of the new shades leather comes in this season—are a fun way to revamp your look.

6. Toss the tights
Bare legs were a foolish decision during the cold months of winter, but it’s finally appropriate to skip the stockings. Show off sun-kissed skin and a perfect pedi in a spring-ready dress or skirt and blouse paired with some showstopping sandals.
