In Parson Weems’ famous tale of George Washington as a young boy, our first president, after receiving a beautiful axe from a wealthy merchant, got a little hatchet crazy and decided to chop down his father’s favorite cherry tree. Upon being confronted, George replied, “I cannot tell a lie, father, you know I cannot tell a lie! I did cut it with my little hatchet.” Three cheers for moral fortitude and for always telling the truth, even in the most sticky of situations! On Monday, celebrate President George Washington’s birthday (and President’s Day) with some sweet cherry treats in his honor.
