Swimsuits 101 with Shoshanna Gruss

By  May 24, 2013

Nothing gives a girl anxiety quite like having to try on a bathing suit. To ease those fears, we enlisted the help of a pro: Shoshanna Gruss, the designer behind the lines, Shoshanna and Shoshanna Swimwear. She has worked with Judith Ripka, Charlotte Ronson, and now you, spreading tips on how to look your best this summer! Glam.com chatted with the designer to learn how to shop for a bathing suit, what trends we should look out for, and summer vacay plans.

1.      When shopping for a bathing suit, what is the most important thing to consider?

The most important thing is fit, and then of course finding the right style for your body type.  Always try the suit on before purchasing and know that sizes will vary, even from the same label.  Try on several styles and keep in mind what you will be doing in your bathing suit. If your suit is more for lounging by the pool or on the beach, you can go with something a bit more fashionable but if you’re planning to be active, look for a style that is functional and can handle movement. Also remember that cotton bathing suits are more for show. They will take a long time to dry compared to a polyester/Spandex blend.

2.   What swimwear trends are you most excited about this summer?

Summer is the perfect time to go for bursts of color like neon coral, pink and green. I’m also loving sea-glass colors—they’re happy but not overly feminine and a great way to balance girly ruffles or a pretty floral print.

3.   Besides throwing on jean shorts, what are a few ways we can cover up at the beach?

A graphic or Ikat print tunic with ¾ sleeves is great because you can throw it over a bikini with cute shorts and be ready for a night out. A fun printed maxi is another great option.

4.   What do you suggest to help women look and feel sexy in a one-piece?

A one-piece is such a classic style and there are so many options available this season. It’s all about finding the perfect silhouette to flatter your body type and draw attention to your best assets. For example, ruching is a great way to slim your middle section. A v-neck style adds a sexy edge and will make you appear long and lean.

5.    Best way to beat the heat in New York City?

A must-have for me is a big straw hat!  They are loose enough to let your head breathe, and help you stay cool on those hot summer days.

6.    How do you get in shape for the summer?

I started to do yoga a few years ago, and it’s added such a nice level to my life.  I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like to, but on the days I do, I feel I’ve been given so much from it.  It truly is about the mind AND body.

7.    Where are you planning to vacation? What will you do there?

During the summer, we spend most of our time in the Hamptons.  One of my favorite things to do is go the bay beaches in the Hamptons. We pack a huge picnic lunch and I have one of those huge nets and we sweep the floor of the beach.  I love exploring and catching frogs with my daughter and building fun memories. It’s those accidental moments that always turn out to be the moments you remember.
