For a show that’s been on the air for twelve seasons, the behind the scenes secrets of Project Runway are quite guarded. But not for long. Glam was invited to tour the space where the magic of fashion happens in order to hang out in the designers’ workspaces, check out the accessories wall, watch a runway show and chat with the cast, you know – Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, and Zac Posen.
While it is unquestionable that the show retains its singular focus ‑ watching aspiring designers make their way through challenges ‑ a few changes have been made, namely in the judging department. Where Michael Kors used to provide witty commentary, we now have the effervescent Posen. Instead of Gunn keeping his opinions to the work room, he’s now on the runway, offering up one rescue per season. Finally, though the judges were once relegated to their seats, they now have the chance to look up close at the garments, uncovering extra special attention paid details or a lack of attention paid to seams.
For the 11th episode, Peter Som joined the crew as a guest judge, offering his insight as the aspiring designers were asked to be inspired by young people in NYC who are “making it matter” in some way. “I think the general public sees fashion as something fascinating because it’s considered to be a glamorous industry,” he said. “I think what you see on Project Runway is just a little piece of the pie of how much work it takes.”
After following in the footsteps of the many designers who’ve appeared on the show – peeking into the workroom, lounge, sewing room, and finally the runway scene, we sat down to chat with Klum and Posen about life on the set.
Klum on the success designers find after Project Runway:
Even big time designers come to me and say, ‘Do you want to finance into my business?’ You don’t always know what goes on behind the scenes so I can only imagine what it’s like for people starting new. A lot of them work from their apartments, as Christian [Siriano] for example did. I know a lot of his backstory how he started, then came here and won, now I see his studio! It’s no Michael Kors studio, but it’s a good studio. Winning doesn’t mean you’ll make it but it’s definitely a push. It’s up to you on how you use this going forward. Daniel Vosovic is someone who did! He’s now part of the CFDA which is fantastic. To get in there, you have to be approved by everyone in this industry. I’m proud of them, we gave them a platform by being here!
Zac Posen on his relationship with the cast members:
I’m inspired by Heidi on the daily shooting basis. Nina and I get to catch up on what’s latest and greatest in fashion. Tim is unbelievable. On set we’re all very professional when it’s go-time. Heidi and I are hams, we like to sing on set and we keep ourselves entertained. We hum melodies we have shadow dance off behind the runway set. We keep ourselves very entertained. She’s such a pro and she’s such an amazing hard working superwomen.
Posen on his relationship with Klum:
Heidi was on my runway quite a few years back and I’ve always loved Heidi. Ever since we met, over a decade ago, Heidi and I have always had a strong affinity for each other. She’s built an amazing business an amazing time. She has a strong point of view and she stands by it. She’s a very quick delegator. There’s no grey; it’s black or white and that’s good for a show where you have to get to a quick decision fast.
