5-big-beauty-stories-2013

Between cool collaborations, a fresh batch of beauty ambassadors, and a slew of cropped coifs, 2013 turned out to be a big year for beauty. Social media and the selfie revolution sparked many of the huge stories that we couldn’t stop talking about this year, and will continue to play a big role in 2014. (The next big celeb haircut anyone?) Below are the beauty stories that defined 2013.

Marc Jacobs Beauty DebutsMarc Jacobs kicked off 2013 with the biggest news of the year: the debut of his own cosmetics line with Sephora. The anticipation held many beauty buffs in its clutches, and when the line hit shelves in time for Fashion Week, it instantly became a fave of the chic set and makeup mavens alike.

Punk Becomes Popular – Since Punk held the honor of the theme of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Annual Costume Institute Gala, it seems everyone added a little punk to their portfolio for the red carpet. Miley Cyrus sported spikes, Miranda Kerr and Sienna Miller fashioned faux undercuts, and even Ginnfer Goodwin channeled her inner Siouxsie Soux for a series of cool deconstructed looks we tried to recreate the rest of the year.

RiRi Hearts Mac – MAC turned to its iTunes playlist in 2013 as it tapped the likes of Nicki Minaj and Hayley Williams for collections, but none compared to the bad gal herself, Rihanna. The Unapologetic songstress crafted three collections for the beauty brand, which sold out in the blink of an eye. To make the moment even better, Riri’s set to serve as the face of the beauty brand’s 2014 Viva Glam campaign.

Beyoncé’s Pixie Point – It was pixie seen round the world when Beyoncé snapped a selfie after she clipped her signature mermaid waves into a gilded pixie cut. Though the look was short-lived, she kept her Bey-hive and the world on its toes for even more surprises later in the year (Yeah, we know you’ve got the new album on repeat as we speak.).

J. Law’s Close Cut – She’s the girl on fire, who made headlines as the tripped her way to Oscar gold, and Jennifer Lawrence lit up social media feeds in November with a new look. She traded her Katniss braid for a pixie cut during the press tour for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, shocking Facebook fans and sending shivers of worry for the character’s look in the subsequent sequels.

Here’s to an even more immaculate 2014!
