For the May 2013 cover of the fashion bible, Wintour chose none other than the newest Daisy Buchanan, Carey Mulligan, to front the issue. Dressed in Oscar de la Renta, Mulligan posed for legendary photographer Mario Testino showing off undeniable presence and position as a true star.
Through the pages of her editorial, Mulligan easily wins over the reader, recounting tales that explain everything from her research process to the moment she found out she would be playing Buchanan. In an oddly perfect turn of events, she was sitting across from the film’s costume director, Catherine Martin at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards when she got the call from Bahz Luhrmann, and proceeded to party the night away in true Zelda Fitzgerald fashion with the Olsen twins.
While it’s easy to fall in love with Mulligan as an actress and person, she’s aware that her role as Buchanan will bring about controversy from the audience. “I’m fully prepared to be completely ripped apart,” she said. “Well, I’m not prepared; that’s the thing. I don’t want to be torn apart. We’ve all just tried something; we had fun, and we tried to do something interesting and exciting, something that people could connect with.”
