Beach days tend to be the best days, but they do require a bit of preparation. Between the sun’s strong rays and your inevitable dips in the ocean, your beach bag must be packed with several necessities. Before you get too excited about that post-beach glow you’ll be sporting or being able to read a book uninterrupted, make sure you’ve got everything you need for a sun-filled day. Then feel free to throw on that bathing suit, slip into some flip-flops, and walk on down to the water. Oh, and you really won’t want to forget those sunglasses.

1.  Theodora and Callum Teal Multi Giza Caftan, $195
Because, really, what’s a trip to the beach without a caftan? This elegant cover-up ensures that you’ll arrive in style—and stay warm if it happens to get windy.

2. Bamboula Ltd. and Madewell Woven Shoulder Bag, $78
Doesn’t this look like a bag that will fit your entire life? That’s what we thought. It’s big enough to hold everything under the sun (get it?), and we absolutely love the beachy stripes.

3. Illesteva Leonard Mirrored-Lens Sunglasses, $178
Mirrored sunglasses are truly having a moment, so you won’t want to be caught on the beach without a pair. Just be sure to keep track of them throughout the day!

4. Lisa Marie Fernandez Zip Bandeau “Lauren” Bikini, $325
A bandeau bikini will help minimize strange tan lines that you’ll be embarrassed to sport at work or on a night out. Better yet, the durable neoprene material in this bathing suit will last forever.

5. Tkees Glitters Flip-Flops in Sandbeam, $50
A little bit of metallic goes a long way with these delicate flip-flops. They’re basically a neutral, so they’ll perfectly match all the bathing suits and cover-ups you’ll be sporting this summer.

6. Rag & Bone Summer Fedora, $175
Grab a hat as an extra shield for your face. Even though you’ll surely be slathering on sunscreen all day, a fedora is added protection—with significant sartorial payoff.

7. Lacoste Home Rainbow Beach Towel, $19.99
Even if you have a folding chair to sit on, a towel is crucial if you want to tan that back of yours. This one is not only colorful, but it’s big too. No sandy face here!

8.Garnier Fructis Style De-Constructed Beach Chic Texturizing Spray, $3.47
Now’s your chance to achieve impeccable beach waves. After you’ve gone for a swim, spritz this texturizing spray all over your hair and give it a shake. Voilà—va-va-voom beach-babe tresses.

9. Kindle Paperwhite 3G, $189
There’s no better place than the beach to catch up on your reading. Indulge in that book you’ve been meaning to get to forever … and then have another one on tap for when you’re done.

10. Punchcase by Leslie Hsu Kindle Cover, $37.57
Protect your Kindle! There’s nothing worse than sandy electronics after a day spent oceanside. This zip-around case will keep your Kindle covered—and keep the sand off of it.

11. Supergoop! AcaiFusion SPF 30 Lip Balm, $8.50
Sunburned lips are just the worst. Beat the burn with a lip balm that has sunscreen in it, and be sure to reapply it throughout the day. Plus, it’s a pretty color that you can use even when you’re not sitting in the sun.

12.C. Wonder Cork Zip-Top Pouch, $54
Keep all those little things contained (money, keys, lip balm, etc.) in a convenient pouch that you can throw into your bag and not worry that everything will just fall straight to the bottom, never to be seen again.

13. Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Lotion Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum SPF 70, $9.99
The sun can damage your skin and also dry it out. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF, of course, and a hydrating element to keep your skin protected and smooth throughout the day.
