Though the announcement of Nicolas Ghesquière‘s departure from Balenciaga was only made official on Monday, there are already assumptions of not only his next career step, but successors for the design role that he cemented.
As easily surmised, Ghesquière could potentially have decided to part ways with Balenciaga in order to focus on his own eponymous line. In previous years, he mentioned the desire in passing, and now there are talks of rival luxury goods company, LVMH, heavily courting the talented designer. Should he decide to branch out on his own with Bernard Arnault, it will be interesting to see how the situation transpires.
In terms of the now empty creative director position at Balenciaga, PPR reportedly has a short list of designers who could replace Ghesquière. Topping the list are notable creators including Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra, and the boys of Proenza Schouler, while Kostas Murkudis, Bouchra Jarrar, Mary Katrantzou, Christopher Kane, J.W. Anderson, and Thomas Tait have also scored a position based on their talent.
