As you know, we can’t leave the house without a little mascara, so you can imagine our shock as we saw a slew of shows skip the staple entirely last week. With Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs, and many more serving at litmus tests for the latest trends, we’re fearing mascara will face the same fate as nail art.
It’s possible as shows from Helmut Lang, Public School, and Yigal Azrouël continued the no-makeup makeup trend, save for the bumped up brows to add a youthful touch to the clothes. The fresh-faced look often balances the richer textures of the fall, including the tons of furs that hit the catwalk this season and 2013’s luxe leathers.
Even more involved looks from the likes of Derek Lam tossed out the tubes in lieu of a more modern look mascara can’t fulfill. “I feel not doing mascara always makes it looks more modern.” Diane Kendal told The Cut. Kabuki agreed. “It means that aren’t really any rules,” he explained. “People of my generation thought they had to have mascara to look presentable. I think now people are thinking, Maybe I can have the other makeup and skip the mascara.”
Mascara mavens, never fear; just because the models are doing it, doesn’t mean you’re obligated to follow suit. Most of the makeup artists agree that regardless of trends, makeup is just as personal as style. “Just don’t do something because you’ve always done it,” Dick Page told the site. “That’s when makeup gets boring. Think about what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.”
Ok, so we won’t apply as many coats when September rolls around. That’s a solid enough compromise, right?
