'Tweakments': What You Should Know About The Injectable Trend For Natural-Looking Skin

We don't know about you, but our inner dialogue gets crazier each day, with an endless amount of questions and comparisons. Does that girl over there have lip filler? I mean, they're too plump to be true, but they don't look like Kylie Jenner's lips. And where are the creases? It can't just be good hydration and gloss, can it? I wish my cheekbones were as sculpted as that woman in my pilates class. How does she have no fine lines on her forehead? Ok, that's it; I need to ask her if that alleged second puberty actually hits that hard or if she's gotten buccal fat removal recently.

While we don't recommend just walking up to someone and asking personal questions about their looks, we're here to clear some things up. 'Tweakments' are on the rise, and they're intentionally hard to spot. No, there's nothing in the water making people more conventionally attractive and modelesque while leaving you and your looks behind. There are simply newer, more advanced, and extra-subtle techniques for cosmetic changes. Here's what you should know about the injectable trend for natural-looking skin.

What are tweakments?

Tweakments are what the internet is calling any minor, non-surgical, cosmetic tweaks people get with the goal of remaining ageless and up to par with beauty standards. Now more than ever, people are choosing to get small amounts of certain injectables, like dermal fillers and Botox, not to change their faces but to soften the blow of aging. Celebrities and the public alike are opting for filler here and there to counteract the fat loss that comes with age, as well as regular Botox treatments to smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

And the anti-aging and subtle beautifying effects of injectable tweakments are all people seem to want these days. Subtlety is key, and people don't want to look overdone or doll-like anymore. Essentially, with tweakments, you get to look like you while enhancing your features to the best of your potential. And let's be honest, not going under the knife to achieve it is also a big selling point here.

Why tweakments and not surgery?

Why tweakments? It comes as no surprise that tweakments are considered the overall safest and least invasive approach to changing one's appearance. Today, surgery is less common among younger patients because of the efficacy of injectables.

Take facelifts, for example, which promise to smooth wrinkles but require going under the knife. Surgical procedures like these require undergoing anesthesia, which comes with its own sets of risks for patients and has an unavoidable weeks-long recovery period (via the American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Botox, especially preventative or 'baby Botox', is minimally invasive and begins treating the problem at its earliest stages with no recovery period or significant health risks.

Another reason more and more people are choosing injectable tweakments over surgery is that they are less permanent and thus less of a commitment. Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, last six to 12 months on average and can be dissolved at any point (via Healthline).

Are tweakments right for you?

Pretty much anyone can be a candidate for tweakments. Injectables, such as dermal fillers and Botox, are versatile and adaptable to each patient's specific needs and aesthetic wishes. So if your self-love can be improved by tweakments, go for it!

The good news is that as soon as wrinkles and fine lines start to become an issue for you, Botox is an option. So if you can't stop worrying about those little lines or notice your makeup settling into them, consider getting Botox injections. Botox can help with frown lines, crow's feet, forehead wrinkles, and other facial fine lines.

Dermal fillers are also occasionally suitable for smoothing fine lines, but most people use them to add volume to areas that lack youthful plumpness. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery says fillers can "replace lost volume to help smooth wrinkles, plump the lips, and restore a more youthful appearance." So if you're concerned about lack of volume anywhere, consider yourself a candidate for fillers.
