Go on a leaf-peeping drive

The peak times to see fall foliage at its most vibrant varies by state, but generally October is the best time to catch them. Visit state park websites and local tourism sites for recommended places and times in your area (keeping in mind these are only estimates). Capturing the sights from your car, with some warm apple cider, is comfy, but you’ll want to pull over and find a hiking trail or two to truly experience the splendor together.

Take a weekend camping trip

Early fall is an ideal time for camping because the temperature is usually just right — not too hot or too cold. Locate campgrounds near you (Hipcamp has lots of out-of-the-box options) and choose the one that suits your preferences. Maybe you like the idea of bonding over scouting out the campsite, constructing your tent, and building your bonfire from scratch — or maybe glamping is more your style. Either way, it’ll all be worth it once you’re cuddled up in front of the fire, roasting marshmallows for s’mores, and stargazing.

Check out local fall festivals

No matter where you live, there’s bound to be a harvest festival within a short distance from you — whether it’s a large annual event at a local farm, with animals to pet (yes, please!), or a charming fall celebration at a neighborhood park. Expect pumpkin-decorating contests, hay rides, autumnal treats, vendors selling holiday wares, and plenty of cute photo opportunities to add to your Instagram feed.

Pick and carve pumpkins

Hey, pumpkin-picking isn’t just for kids! Take a day trip to a pumpkin patch, where you can stroll the grounds, take your time selecting your pumpkins, and check out the neighboring village or town. Later, you can help each other carve the pumpkins and roast the pumpkin seeds.

Watch a football game

If you’re a football fan — or love someone who is — plan a date to a college or pro football game during the season. There’s the pre-game tailgating to get you hyped for kickoff and the excitement you feel from the stadium crowd rooting for their team. It’s not such an intimate setting, but when your guys score, you do get to give your S.O. a big hug and a kiss!

Visit a cider mill or brewery

This takes going out for drinks to the next level. Most cideries and breweries across the country will let you tour the factory, see how the products are made, and enjoy free samples. There’s also usually a patio, where you can have a pint of the cider or beer you liked the most, order local food, and listen to live music.

Stop by a farmer’s market

Here’s another outdoor activity you can do in your neighborhood or several miles away. Bring your own reusable bags and peruse the vegetables, fruits, and crafts on offer. The wonderful thing about locally grown foods is you get to ask questions of the vendors and make it a learning experience as well as a shopping opportunity. Also plan for that night to prepare a meal using the fresh produce you picked up.

Book a ghost tour

To get in the mood for Halloween and really get your heart racing, go on a ghost tour or visit a haunted house. The spookiest of places are, of course, in the oldest parts of the country, such as St. Augustine, Florida; Savannah, Georgia; New Orleans; Boston; Philadelphia; and Colonial Williamsburg. So make it a fun road trip! Otherwise, find a highly rated tour closer to home that may scare you into your beloved’s arms.
