People take astrology very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that they are now getting their Zodiac signs tattooed on their faces. The trend, which also merges the recent obsession with fake freckles, maps out constellations and astrological signs with strategically-placed, semi-permanent dots on the skin.
Aptly called “AstroFrecks,” the designs were created by Jessica Knapik, a cosmetic tattoo artist based in Michigan. She loves the hidden meanings behind the tattoos most: "This way you could get your mom's astrological sign, your dad's, your grandma's, and kind of pay tribute without getting a giant heart that says 'Mom,'" Knapik told Bustle. To everyone else, you just look naturally freckly. But when you connect the dots, the stars align.
It’s a strategy that requires skill. "Cosmetic tattoo artists are trained a little more in aesthetics—beauty, face shapes, brow shapes,” she said in the interview. Knapik uses a mix of pigments, sizes, and placements to ensure the dots aren’t too methodical and look natural. Her advice if you are interested in the galaxy-themed freckles: Do your research. She emphasizes the importance of going to a licensed cosmetic tattoo artist as they use different machines, ink, and needles.
The practice of freckle tattoos first surfaced after Montreal-based cosmetic tattoo artist Gabrielle Rainbow tried them on herself. “In terms of the freckles, when they are ‘freshly done,’ they will appear swollen almost like bee stings, and the swelling will go down within a couple hours and you'll be left with your cute, fresh freckles,” she explained to NewBeauty. “Over the course of one to two months, the color will soften dramatically and look more natural. They will fade naturally with time, and if you wish to keep them you can always get the color boosted whenever you like.”
We’re excited (and a little nervous tbh) to see where people take the technique next.
